Dutch must show anti-Koran film: Danish cartoonist

AMSTERDAM-The Danish cartoonist behind controversial images of the Prophet Mohammad has urged a Dutch right-wing politician to broadcast a film expected to be critical of the Koran despite fears it might spark violence.Kurt Westergaard is the author of a series of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed including one showing him with a bomb as a turban which triggered riots in the Muslim world and a boycott of Danish products when they were published in 2006. Fearing a similar backlash against the Netherlands, the Dutch government has urged politician Geert Wilders not to broadcast a film he has made about the Koran, distancing itself from his views and considering a possible ban. Westergaard told the Dutch Volkskrant daily on Monday no Danish politician would dare to suggest blocking the film."That would mean political suicide. A Danish politician knows that you should not limit freedom of expression. Wilders must just show his film," he said in an interview. Wilders has given few details about his film, but he has called the Koran a "fascist" book that incites violence. Nobody except Wilders and his producers have actually seen the film.Wilders said last week he was disappointed that no Dutch broadcaster wanted to show the movie but said he would probably launch it on March 28 at the parliament's press centre in The Hague and make it available on a special Web site.In the latest protest against the Wilders film and the reprinting of the Prophet Mohammad cartoon, thousands of Afghan students burned Danish and Dutch flags on Sunday and threatened attacks on their troops serving with NATO in Afghanistan. The cartoon was republished by a number of Danish papers last month to show solidarity with Westergaard after three men were arrested on suspicion of plotting to kill him.

Iran-Gulf Arabs must talk to prevent crisis: Qatar PM

DUBAI-Dialogue between Gulf Arabs and Iran over its nuclear ambitions is the best way to avoid another crisis in the oil-exporting region, Qatar's prime minister said."It is very important that we have clear relations, frank relations, with Iran," Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr al-Thani(picture left) said in remarks aired on Monday. Discussion was important and "each side must respect the other's thinking and its understanding of security", he said at a conference in Doha. The United States accuses Iran of seeking nuclear weapons and has pressed its Gulf Arab allies, including Qatar, to cut trade and other ties with Tehran.Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and has mounted its own diplomatic offensive to boost ties with Gulf Arabs-Sunni-ruled countries that have been traditionally suspicious of mainly Shi'ite Iran's ambitions in the region. The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency has been seeking to clarify whether Iran has worked towards developing nuclear weapons and Sheikh Hamad noted differences between the positions of the U.N. agency and Tehran."The IAEA is not 100 percent agreed with Iran but what we hear differs to what we hear from other parties, so it is important that no one shoves the region toward a new adventure and that as neighbors with Iran we have an understanding about this issue," he said.Washington has imposed sanctions on major Iranian state banks, saying they finance terrorism or support nuclear plans.Sheikh Hamad said Gulf Arabs should be careful to prevent misunderstandings or international machinations from pushing the region into another war.

Eight killed as cyclone Jokwe lashes Mozambique

MAPUTO-Tropical cyclone Jokwe battered parts of Mozambique for a third day on Monday, killing at least eight people and destroying thousands of homes in the northern Nampula province, Radio Mozambique reported. The state-controlled broadcaster said four districts were being lashed by heavy downpours and winds of up to 200 kph (125 miles per hour).Thousands of people have had to flee their homes and the cyclone has destroyed almost 20,000 homes, wrecked electricity pylons and uprooted trees.Emergency officials said the cyclone was moving south and they expected the death toll to increase.Paulo Zucula, director of the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC), said Cyclone Jokwe was more dangerous than Cyclone Favio, which hit Mozambique last year killing 10 people."The situation is terrible right now with dangerous winds of 200 kph travelling to the southern parts of Mozambique," he told Reuters.Zucula said more floods could be expected as the cyclone is heading inland to areas in central Zambezia province already battered by floods earlier this year.Tens of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes earlier this year in what the United Nations said could be Mozambique's worst floods in memory, engulfing farmland and wrecking roads and bridges.Last month Cyclone Ivan smashed Madagascar, killing more than 80 people and leaving over 200,000 homeless, but lost steam before striking Mozambique. In Namibia, the weather bureau said it expected more than 20 cms (8 inches) of rain in northern and central areas later this week and predicted a further bout of the flooding that has killed at least 42 people in the north since early February."It's looking a little drier right now, but the weather is going to change dramatically towards the middle of the week," said Riaan van Zyl of the Meteorological Services.Heavy rains in neighbouring Angola led to devastating floods in northern Namibia that have killed at least 42 people and about 26,000 livestock and displaced 4,000 to 5,000 people. The government declared a national emergency last week in four northern regions, and over the weekend new floodwaters cut off Engela Hospital 20 km (12.5 miles) from the Angolan border at Oshikango, from the rest of the country, officials said."People are walking through the water with coffins on their heads to collect their deceased relatives from the hospital," a local resident told Reuters.

PESTILENCE WATCH:Pandemic flu plan would put Chicago on lockdown

CHICAGO-Containing an influenza pandemic in a large U.S. city like Chicago would require widespread school closings, quarantines of infected households and bans on public gatherings,U.S. researchers said on Monday. But, if done quickly and well, such steps could reduce infections by as much as 80 percent, said researcher Stephen Eubank of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, based on a computer simulation of just such an event."If you implement it early and people comply, you can save a lot of people. You can make it look a lot more like a seasonal flu than the 1918 pandemic," said Eubank, referring to a global flu epidemic that started in 1918 and killed between 40 million and 100 million people.Health experts almost universally agree that a global epidemic-a pandemic-of influenza is inevitable.Flu is always circulating but, every few decades, a completely new strain emerges and makes millions sicker than usual.Government estimates suggest vaccines and drugs will not be enough to slow or prevent a flu pandemic, and the U.S. pandemic plan includes ways to limit the spread by closing schools and implementing strategies to reduce contact with infected people.Eubank led one of three teams of scientists who ran computer simulations to see if drug and social containment efforts could slow the spread of an influenza pandemic in a major U.S. city such as Chicago, which has a population of about 8.6 million people. All three teams found that a combination of antiviral drugs-such as Roche AG and Gilead Sciences Inc.'s Tamiflu-and social distancing efforts would be needed to slow the spread of a pandemic flu, they report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."Depending on how fast it is spreading, it seems as though you really need to throw everything you can at it," Eubank said in a telephone interview.

CHRIST-THE JUST-SUFFERED ONCE FOR SINS...

"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God,being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is,eight souls were saved by water.
The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,)by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God;angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him."

DECEPTION WATCH:U.S. gay bishop not welcome at meeting: Anglicans

CHICAGO-Leaders of the U.S. Episcopal Church were told once and for all on Monday that the gay man they elevated to bishop will not be allowed to attend a top, once-a-decade worldwide Anglican church meeting this summer."It feels as if, instead of leaving the 99 sheep in search of the one, my chief pastor and shepherd, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Rowan Williams), has cut me out of the herd," said Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire,(picture left) after receiving the definitive word that he will be excluded from the Anglican Communion's Lambeth Conference in England.[[[It was the U.S. church's consecration of Robinson in 2003 as the first bishop known to be in an openly gay relationship in more than four centuries of Anglican church history that jolted the 77 million-member global church, already divided over biblical interpretation, the ordination of women and the blessing of same-sex unions.]]]Robinson's exclusion from the Lambeth Conference had previously been announced. But the 2.4 million-member Episcopal Church, Anglicanism's U.S. branch, had been negotiating the issue, hoping to change the situation.Word that no change would be possible came from the Episcopal Church House of Bishops meeting in Texas.Robinson said he had been offered instead a chance to appear for media interviews at an exhibition that accompanies the Lambeth Conference."One workshop on one afternoon and being interviewed by the secular press was not anything I was seeking. I wasn't going to Lambeth to have another interview with the secular press. If interviewed at all, I want to talk with a theologian. I want to talk about the love of Christ. I want to talk about the God who saved me and redeemed me and continues to live in my life," he said.Robinson said he would nonetheless attend the meeting as an outside observer.

Israeli army and Gaza militants in uneasy lull

JERUSALEM-Israel and Hamas Islamists who control the Gaza Strip have both been holding their fire across the tense border as Egypt tries to mediate a truce, officials from both sides said on Monday.Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert denied any agreement to halt military action against militants in the coastal enclave, but Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he believed Israel would go along with a deal.Abbas said Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the main groups in Gaza behind cross-border rocket fire at Israel, want assurances their leaders will not be attacked by the Jewish state.A Gaza truce sought by the Palestinian president could be key to U.S.-brokered peace efforts but likewise benefit Hamas, which seized the coastal enclave in June after routing Abbas's more secular Fatah forces.Israel has not struck in the Gaza Strip since Thursday, three days after it ended an offensive that killed 120 Palestinians. The number of Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel has also dropped sharply since Olmert said last Wednesday Israeli forces would have no reason to attack Gaza if the daily salvoes stopped. Hamas's armed wing has not itself claimed responsibility for firing any rockets since Israel wrapped up its ground and air assault. In the absence of Israeli "aggression",Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said the group had no cause to launch them."It seems that Hamas has decided for now not to shoot. And we're not shooting either," said an Israeli official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Colombia finally strikes at rebels' top leadership

BOGOTA-The killing of two Colombian rebel commanders in less than a week, one betrayed and dismembered by his own bodyguard, has ended four decades of government failure to hit the guerrillas' top leadership. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC, had never before lost a member of its seven-man secretariat,so the two deaths in quick succession were a historic blow to the communist insurgency.Rebel fighters, harried by a six-year-old government offensive, are deserting in record numbers, providing intelligence to an army backed by billions of dollars in U.S. aid, including American military advisors who help plan strikes. The guerrillas continue kidnapping and blowing up energy installations as part of the war but military officials believe the FARC is now slowly imploding.Even opposition figures admit that conservative President Alvaro Uribe has begun to show long-awaited results.Raul Reyes, the FARC's No. 2 leader, died in a March 1 raid carried out inside Ecuador that set off a regional diplomatic crisis. The army tracked Reyes down by intercepting a satellite phone call he made from along the Ecuador border.Ivan Rios, another member of the FARC's secretariat, was shot dead last week by his security chief, who later told reporters that morale in the group is at an all-time low."It's acceptable to lose a leader like Reyes in an enemy attack, but the way Rios died shows the internal degradation of the FARC," said political analyst Alvaro Jimenez, a former member of the demobilized M-19 leftist rebel group.

Kentucky Lawmaker Wants to Make Anonymous Internet Posting Illegal

Kentucky Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal. The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site.Their full name would be used anytime a comment is posted. If the bill becomes law,the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that.Representative Couch says he filed the bill in hopes of cutting down on online bullying. He says that has especially been a problem in his Eastern Kentucky district.Action News 36 asked people what they thought about the bill. Some said they felt it was a violation of First Amendment rights.Others say it is a good tool toward eliminating online harassment. Representative Couch says enforcing this bill if it became law would be a challenge.

Syria 'intensely' arming itself:Rockets, missiles place all of Israel within firing zone

JERUSALEM-Syria is in the midst of "intensely"arming itself, placing into position rockets and missiles capable of striking the entire Jewish state, according to an assessment presented to the Knesset today by multiple Israeli security agencies. The announcement follows a WND exclusive report last month quoting security officials stating Syria, aided by Russia and Iran, has been furiously acquiring rockets and missiles, including projectiles capable of hitting any point in Israel. The officials listed anti-tank, anti-aircraft and ballistic missiles as some of the arms procured by Syria.Yesterday, Israel's Mossad and Israel Defense Forces Military Intelligence chiefs presented an annual security report to the Knesset warning of Syria's armament program. The chiefs also warned of a possible flare-up at Israel's northern border with the Hezbollah terror group and said in their assessment Iran could cross the technological threshold enabling it to assemble a nuclear bomb by the end of next year. The assessment came after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced last week negotiations between the Jewish state and Syria should be seriously considered it if would bring an end to Syrian-sponsored terrorism and Damascus' "involvement in the axis of evil." The negotiations would aim for some sort of Israeli evacuation from the Golan Heights strategic, mountainous territory looking down on Israeli and Syrian population centers twice used by Damascus to launch ground invasions into the Jewish state.Syria openly provides refuge to Palestinian terror leaders, including the chiefs of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and has been accused of shipping weapons to Hezbollah. Damascus is also accused of supporting the insurgency against U.S. troops in Iraq.
'Furious frenzy' to get Russian missiles
Olmert's announcement of Israel's willingness to negotiate followed a WND report in which Israeli and Jordanian security officials outlined Syria's recent armament.A Jordanian security official said one of the main reasons Damascus did not retaliate after Israel carried out its Sept. 6 air strike inside Syria-which allegedly targeted a nascent nuclear facility-was because Syria's rocket infrastructure was not yet complete. The official said that after the Israeli air strike, Syria picked up the pace of acquiring rockets and missiles, largely from Russia with Iranian backing, with the goal of completing its missile and rocket arsenal by the end of the year. The Jordanian official said Syria is aiming to possess the capacity to fire more than 100 rockets into Israel per hour for a sustained period of time."The Syrians have three main goals: to maximize their anti-tank, anti-aircraft and ballistic missile and rocket capabilities," explained the Jordanian official. According to Israeli and Jordanian officials, Syria recently quietly struck a deal with Russia that allows Moscow to station submarines and war boats off Syrian ports. In exchange, Russia is supplying Syria with weaponry at lower costs, with some of the missiles and rockets being financed by Iran."The Iranians opened an extended credit line with Russia for Syria with the purpose of arming Syria," said one Jordanian security official."Russia's involvement and strategic positioning is almost like a return to its Cold War stance," the official said. Both the Israeli and Jordanian officials told WND large quantities of Syrian rockets and missiles are being stockpiled at the major Syrian ports of Latakia and Tartus.Syria's new acquisitions include Russia's S-300 surface-to-air missile defense shield, which is similar to the U.S.-funded, Israeli-engineered Arrow anti-missile system currently deployed in Israel. The S-300 system is being run not by Syria but by Russian naval technicians who work from Syria's ports, security officials said.New ballistic missiles and rockets include Alexander rockets and a massive quantity of various Scud surface-to-surface missiles, including Scud B and Scud D missiles.Israeli security officials noted Syria recently test-fired two Scud D surface-to-surface missiles, which have a range of about 250 miles, covering most Israeli territory. The officials said the Syrian missile test was coordinated with Iran and is believed to have been successful. It is not known what type of warhead the missiles had.In addition to longer-range Scuds, Syria is in possession of shorter-range missiles such as 220 millimeter and 305 millimeter rockets, some of which have been passed on to the Lebanon-based terrorist group Hezbollah.Israel has information Syria recently acquired and deployed Chinese-made C-802 missiles, which were successfully used against the Israeli navy during Israel's war against Hezbollah in 2006. The missiles were passed to Syria by Iran, Israeli security officials told WND.Russia recently sold to Syria advanced anti-tank missiles similar to the projectiles that devastated Israeli tanks during the last Lebanon war, causing the highest number of Israeli troop casualties during the 34 days of military confrontations.Syria and Russia are negotiating the sale of advanced anti-aircraft missiles.

ENVIRO WATCH:Southern Baptist Leaders Issue Surprising Call to Fight Climate Change

NEW YORK-In a major shift, a group of Southern Baptist leaders said their denomination has been "too timid" on environmental issues and has a biblical duty to stop global warming. The declaration, signed by the president of the Southern Baptist Convention among others and released Monday, shows a growing urgency about climate change even within groups that once dismissed claims of an overheating planet as a liberal ruse. The conservative denomination has 16.3 million members and is the largest Protestant group in the U.S.The signers of "A Southern Baptist Declaration on the Environment and Climate Change" acknowledged that not all Christians accept the science behind global warming. They said they do not expect fellow believers to back any proposed solutions that would violate Scripture, such as advocating population control through abortion. However, the leaders said that current evidence of global warming is "substantial," and that the threat is too grave to wait for perfect knowledge about whether, or how much, people contribute to the trend."We believe our current denominational resolutions and engagement with these issues have often been too timid," according to the statement. "Our cautious response to these issues in the face of mounting evidence may be seen by the world as uncaring, reckless and ill-informed. We can do better."No one speaks on behalf of all Southern Baptists, who leave decision-making to local churches. Yet the signatories represent some of the top figures in the convention.Among them are the denomination's president, the Rev. Frank Page of South Carolina; two former presidents, the Rev. James Merritt of Georgia and the Rev. Jack Graham of Texas; and the Rev. Ronnie Floyd of Arkansas, who helped conservatives solidify control of the denomination in the 1970s and 1980s.Also backing the effort are presidents of three prominent Baptist-affiliated schools: David Dockery of Union University in Tennessee; Timothy George of Samford University's Beeson Divinity School in Alabama; and Danny Akin of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina. More than 35 people signed the statement.Supporters plan to collect more signatures for the declaration through baptistcreationcare.org and encourage congregations to advocate for environmental protection.Even before Monday's statement, religious activism on climate change had broadened beyond just liberal-leaning churches. The 1993 "Evangelical Declaration on the Care of Creation" became a guiding document for the Evangelical Environmental Network. The Rev. Rich Cizik, Washington director of the National Association of Evangelicals, became a prominent environmental advocate, trying to persuade conservative Christians that global warming is real.Polls of younger evangelicals found they considered environmental protection a priority. But many of the most conservative Christians, including some Southern Baptist leaders, remained skeptical, and vigorously challenged evangelical environmentalists. The Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation, backed by James Dobson of Focus on the Family and Charles Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship ministries, among others, said that while conservation is important, some environmental concerns "are without foundation or greatly exaggerated."Last year, Dobson and other Christian conservatives unsuccessfully pressured the National Association of Evangelicals to silence Cizik on the issue. The last Southern Baptist statement on global warming came at the denomination's 2007 annual meeting, which approved a statement questioning the belief that humans are largely to blame for climate change and warning that increased regulation of greenhouse gases will hurt the poor.Even so, Jonathan Merritt, a student at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, began rallying denominational leaders to take a different approach. Merritt, 25, son of former convention president James Merritt, said a theology class had inspired him.His professor had compared destroying God's creation to "tearing a page out of the Bible.""That struck me. It broke me," the younger Merritt said in an interview, "and that was the impetus that began a life change, a shift of perspective for me."

Iranian Stamp Commemorates Slain Hezbollah Commander

TEHRAN,Iran-[[[Iran's postal service issued a stamp Monday in commemoration of a top Hezbollah commander wanted by the U.S. who was killed in a car bombing in Syria last month, the official news agency IRNA reported. The stamp, which features a smiling picture of Imad Mughniyeh wearing a military uniform, was unveiled at a ceremony attended by the Iranian minister of post and communication, Mohammad Soleimani, and Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, former chief of the country's elite Revolutionary Guards, according to the report. The image used for the stamp appeared frequently at many ceremonies the Iranian government held for Mughniyeh after his death.Iranian media called the senior Lebanese militant the Che Guevara of the Middle East.]]]Hezbollah and Iran, its main backer, blamed Mughniyeh's assassination on Israel, which denied any role.Mughniyeh was one of the world's most feared terror masterminds, accused of killing hundreds of Americans in suicide bombings in Lebanon the 1980s.He was also blamed for taking Westerners hostage and the 1985 hijacking of a TWA airliner in which a U.S. Navy diver was killed. In the 1990s, he went into hiding, and Western and Israeli intelligence accuse him of planning suicide bombings against the Israeli Embassy and a Jewish cultural center in Argentina that killed over 100 people.Over the past 15 years, he is believed to have moved in secret between Lebanon,Iran and Syria.

THE END OF ALL THINGS IS AT HAND...

"Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh,arm yourselves likewise with the same mind:for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men,but to the will of God.
For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
But the end of all things is at hand:be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer."

Al Qaeda Online Supporters Lash Out at Taliban for Not Remaining Loyal to the Global Jihad

CAIRO,Egypt-Al Qaeda supporters on the Web have unleashed an unprecedented flood of criticism of Afghanistan's Taliban, once seen by extremists as the model of an Islamic state. Now extremists accuse the Taliban of straying from the path of global jihad after its leader Mullah Omar issued a statement saying he seeks good relations with the world and even sympathizes with Shiite Iran.In February, the Taliban announced it wanted to maintain good and "legitimate" relations with neighboring countries. Then, last week online militants were outraged when the movement expressed solidarity with Iran, condemning the latest round of sanctions imposed on Tehran by the U.N. Security Council over its nuclear enrichment. The Shiite Islamic state of Iran is viewed as anathema by the Sunni militants of the Al Qaeda and other extremist movements."This is the worst statement I have ever read ... the disaster of defending the (Iranian) regime is on par with the Crusaders in Afghanistan and Iraq,"wrote poster Miskeen, whose name translates literally as "the wretched" and who is labeled as one of the more influential writers on an Al Qaeda linked Web site. While anyone with a password can comment on these militant Islamist forums, the Al Qaeda-linked forum moderators single out certain individuals as particularly important. It's not clear, however, whether the resentment among Al Qaeda supporters reflects a rift between the Taliban and Al Qaeda's leadership. The Taliban hosted Osama bin Laden until the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 toppled the movement, and since then the Taliban and Al Qaeda are believed to have worked closely in the Afghan-Pakistan border area."The Taliban seeks to be a respected political movement that can at the same time govern Afghanistan and be at limited peace with its neighbors," said Rita Katz, the director of the Washington-based SITE Intelligence Group which monitors militant Web traffic. But she cautioned that the "Taliban's surprising call to support Iran in the face of new U.N. sanctions does not mean that the group is suddenly offering unequivocal support to Iran," though it shows readiness to coexist with the neighbor.Cairo-based expert on Islamic movements Diaa Rashwan linked the Taliban's quest for international legitimacy to possible future negotiations with the Afghan government."Mullah Omar's statement about good relations are in response to accusations from the West that the Taliban is radical and does not accept dialogue or negotiations with others," he said.Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in September he was ready to negotiate with the Taliban, including Mullah Omar himself, to put an end to the insurgency, while U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan William Wood said in December he would support reconciliation talks, with some conditions."The only problem about an eventual compromise with the Taliban is the fate of Al Qaeda, whether it will be expelled from Afghanistan or commit itself to the Afghan government," Rashwan said. The Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in the mid-1990s and created a society run according to the strictest interpretation of Islamic law that has since been seen as a model for conservative Muslim militants the world over. However, it's pursuit of practical policies that involve working together with entities that have different ideologies counters the beliefs of the global jihadist trend represented by Al Qaeda."I am afraid that a nationalist ... trend is penetrating Taliban regime," Miskeen said."Sheiks Osama (bin Laden) and (Ayman) al-Zawahri should censure Taliban for these statements," said another poster, by the name al-Zarqawiya, an allusion to Al Qaeda leaders.Katz, however, noted that "Bin Laden and Zawahri understand the need for diplomacy" and may well understand that the Taliban wants to walk a fine line between being part of the international global jihad while still positioning itself to one day rule Afghanistan."The Taliban is not necessarily moving away from its model of an Islamic state, but instead seeking a path that will enable the Taliban to achieve its concept of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan while at the same time attaining the respect of at least some members of the international community," she said.

Saudi woman defies driving ban to mark women's day

RIYADH-A Saudi woman activist marked this year's International Women's Day by defying a ban on women driving in the ultra-conservative kingdom and posted a video of her act on YouTube.Wajiha Huwaidar, a leading activist in a campaign to allow women to get behind the wheel in the desert kingdom, confirmed to AFP on Sunday that it was her in the video posted on the popular website. She said she recorded the video while she drove in a deserted area in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and posted it on the Internet on Saturday to mark International Women's Day.In the video, Huwaidar appeared driving calmly as few cars passed by along the almost empty road."Women can drive in the countryside. There is no problem with that. Some women do the school run everyday without being obstructed," she claimed."What is important is to allow women to drive in urban areas."In September, more than 1,100 Saudi men and women signed a petition to King Abdullah urging him to lift the controversial ban on women driving in the oil-rich kingdom, which applies a strict form of Sharia (Islamic law). The petition-a brainchild of Huwaidar and other activists-stressed that Islam does not put constraints on women such as the driving ban and points out that women already "drive in villages and remote rural areas."A group of 47 women defied the ban on driving by roaming the streets of the capital Riyadh in 15 cars in November 1990. They were swiftly rounded up by police and penalised, while their male guardians were reprimanded. The following year, a fatwa (religious edict) was issued by the then mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz, prohibiting women from driving cars.Women in the oil-rich Gulf desert kingdom are forced to cover from head to toe in public, and cannot travel without written permission from their male guardian.

Slump in Gulf tourists hits heart of Lebanon's economy

BEIRUT-Lebanon's political crisis has turned into an economic nightmare for the vital tourist industry, hard hit by a slump in tourists from oil-rich Gulf states who have been told to avoid the troubled country.[[Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain, whose citizens often spend as much of their money on Lebanon's ski slopes in the winter as they do on its beaches in the summer, have advised their citizens not to travel to a country in the grip of its worst political crisis since the end of the civil war in 1990.[[{{{Riyadh-one of Lebanon's main bankrollers-went even further, recently instructing its citizens already in Lebanon to leave the country "if possible".And Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal warned last month that the country was "on the verge of civil war."}}}For a tourist industry already reeling from February 2005 assassination of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri and Israel's war on Hezbollah in the summer 2006, such warnings are the kiss of death."Without tourists from the Gulf, we can't live!" exclaimed Elyssar who works at a furniture store along the road that connects the capital Beirut to Bhammdoun and Aley, two villages very popular with rich Arab tourists."More than 50 percent of our revenue comes from them as every year they update the furniture in their Lebanese apartments," she said.Lebanon has been rocked by a wave of attacks against anti-Syrian figures over the past three years and is riven by a protracted political crisis that has left the country without a president for more than three months.A long-running sit-in staged by the Hezbollah-led opposition in Beirut's downtown, rebuilt and renovated from the ruins of civil war, has also left the usually vibrant area deserted, forcing most of its shops and restaurants out of business.
'We can't talk about tourism anymore, it's over'
"We can't talk about tourism anymore, it's over," lamented Pierre Ashkar, president of Lebanon's hotel owners' syndicate."Since Hariri's assassination in 2005 and the war in 2006, it's been nothing but a series of (assassination) attempts, fiery discourses and skirmishes. All this scares tourists away."Tourist numbers were little more than one million in 2007, a dramatic fall to expectations of close to 1.6 million before the 2006 war with Israel.According to the general union of Arab chambers of commerce, losses in the tourism sector over the past two and a half years have run up to 2.2 billion dollars. In the capital, where Saudis and Emiratis are known for their extravagant purchases, anxiety has won out.In an upmarket boutique that sells signature bags priced between 500 and 1,000 dollars apiece, salesgirl Cosette said sales have plunged because of a lack of customers. In Beirut's large hotels, the number of customers has also gone down."There have unfortunately been some cancellations by some Gulf clients," said a manager at the Bristol, once the grandest hotel in Lebanon.Achkar said that during normal times, at least 60 percent of hotel guests come from the Gulf but that occupancy rates had dropped by half over the past two years."We cut prices in order to attract clients," he said."Thousands of people come to the country from the Gulf and we are wasting all of it," said Paul Aariss, president of the Lebanese restaurant owners syndicate."Now we are afraid that Lebanese expatriates will decide to not come and vist the country. The land of the cedars, as Lebanon is known, has about four million inhabitants and one of the largest diasporas in the world estimated at several million people."My wife, who is Lebanese, is in Canada but doesn't want to come back to the country. And why should she come in these conditions?" said Toufiq Shehayeb, a cafe owner in Aley.
Jawad, a 23-year-old bakery worker, said the latest travel advisories issued by the Gulf states were of little consequence as tourists have already deserted Lebanon."Since the 2006 war, they haven't come. Who feels like doing tourism in a country that could become like Iraq?"In a luxury furniture store at an upscale mall, people seem less preoccupied with the situation. "Arab princes and princesses are amongst our customers," said shopkeeper Randa. "They make their purchases on the Internet."

DHARAMSHALA, India-Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Monday attacked China's human rights record, accusing it of "unimaginable and gross violations" in his Himalayan homeland. "Repression continues to increase with numerous, unimaginable and gross violations of human rights, denial of religious freedom and politicisation of religious issues," he told hundreds of flag-waving supporters on the 49th anniversary of his escape to India after an abortive uprising in Lhasa. The Nobel Peace Prize winner's angry comments came in a speech in the northern Indian town of Dharamshala and contrasted sharply with what his critics say has been a "soft" approach on China."For nearly six decades Tibetans have had to live in a state of constant fear under Chinese repression," he said."All these take place as a result of the Chinese government's lack of respect of the Tibetan people," the 72-year-old told the gathering from his palace in this seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile.The Dalai Lama said however that he would not abandon his call for autonomy in Tibet even though six rounds of talks with the Chinese since 2002 have yielded little result."During the past few years, Tibet has witnessed increased repression and brutality. In spite of these unfortunate developments my stand and determination to pursue the 'Middle-Way' policy remain unchanged," he said.Despite widespread frustration among the younger generation at China's stranglehold on Tibet, the Dalai Lama remains the unquestioned spiritual leader of the diaspora. He also said August's Beijing Olympics could be a golden opportunity for the international community to expose China, which has ruled Tibet since 1951, over its treatment of Tibetans."Besides sending their athletes, the international community should remind the Chinese government of these issues.... China should prove herself a good host by providing these freedoms," he added.Samdhong Rinpoche, prime minister in the government-in-exile, also lambasted China and backed the Dalai Lama's calls for autonomy-a demand which many younger Tibetans say is just not enough."We do not have any hidden agenda or issues than the basic demand that they (Beijing) should implement conditions of national regional autonomy as set forth in the constitution of China," Rinpoche said. The attack on China coincided with a symbolic march home by 100 Tibetans as part of pro-independence protests ahead of the Beijing Olympics.Thousands waved yellow, blue and red Tibetan flags and cheered on the Buddhist monks in red caps and 10 women who said they planned to make it over the Chinese border.Italian parliamentarian Sergio D'Elia flagged off the symbolic home trek. "It's the duty of every freedom-loving person to support this march," he said. The organisers refused to reveal where any attempt would be made to cross the border but added it could take up to six months to reach the Tibetan capital Lhasa."This march reflects the true aspirations of Tibetans inside Tibet and in exile and this will send a strong message to China that Tibetans will fight the illegal occupation of our land," said Tsewang Rigzin, Tibetan Youth Congress president.
The youngest marcher was 19-year-old high-school student Tenzen Pema, who carried home-made cookies, a bottle of water and a teddybear."My education is not as important as free Tibet and so I am determined to reach my country and plant this flag on the land that belongs to us," she said.Five Tibetan groups who organised the march remained tight-lipped about the route because New Delhi prohibits Tibetan exiles from using India as a springboard for anti-China political campaigns.Tibetan activists are also planning a "Tibetan Olympics" here in May and sent a flaming torch to accompany the marchers.

JIHAD WATCH:Female suicide bomber kills 3 in Iraq

BAGHDAD-A female suicide bomber killed the head of a local security group northeast of Baghdad on Monday, the targeted leader's brother and a provincial police official said. A child and a security guard were also killed. The woman, wearing an explosives belt, entered the house of Sheik Thaeir Ghadhban al-Karkhi in the predominantly Sunni town of Kanaan, about 12 miles east of Baqouba in Iraq's restive Diyala province, and blew herself up, said Duraid Mahmoud, the sheik's brother.A provincial police official, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to release the information, confirmed the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. But al-Qaida in Iraq has been targeting fellow Sunni Arabs who have taken up arms against the militants and joined the so-called awakening councils like the one al-Karkhi led.The councils are made up of U.S.-backed former insurgents who have risen up against the brutality and strict Islamic codes of conduct al-Qaida was trying to impose on local populations. The U.S. military said it was looking into the incident but did not immediately have any details.Mahmoud, the sheik's brother, said the bomber had visited the sheik's house on Sunday, claiming that her husband had been kidnapped and asking for help. Mahmoud said his brother told the woman to return Monday."She came back this morning and nobody checked her. She had an appointment with the sheik and the guards told her to go and knock on his door," Mahmoud said. The woman was ushered into the house and blew herself up once she got close to the sheik, Mahmoud said. He said the sheik's 5-year-old niece and a security guard were also killed. The girl was the daughter of one of al-Karkhi's other brothers. The police official also said a child and a security guard were killed, along with the sheik. At least two other people were wounded.Female suicide bombers have been involved in at least 19 attacks or attempted attacks since the war began, including the grisly bombings of two pet markets that killed nearly 100 people on Feb. 1.A female suicide bomber last struck in a Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad on Feb. 17, detonating herself after soldiers fired three bullets at her. Causalities were disputed in that attack, with Iraqi officials saying four people were killed, while the U.S. military said only the bomber died. The U.S. military said it was looking into reports of the Diyala attack.

END TIMES WEATHER:Storm batters south of UK

WHEN YOU DO WELL AND SUFFER FOR IT.....

"Servants,be subject to your masters with all fear;not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
For this is thankworthy,if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
For what glory is it,if,when ye be buffeted for your faults,ye shall take it patiently?but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it,ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
For even hereunto were ye called:because Christ also suffered for us,leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
Who,when he was reviled, reviled not again;when he suffered,he threatened not;but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we,being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:by whose stripes ye were healed.
For ye were as sheep going astray;but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls."

SIGN of the TIMES:KKK memorabilia shop creates dispute in church owned builing in S.C.

LAURENS, S.C.-A black civil rights activist is fighting to close a store that sells KKK robes and T-shirts emblazoned with racial slurs.David Kennedy(picture left) is confident he can make it happen. After all, he says he owns the building.Since 1996, the Redneck Shop has operated in an old movie theater that, according to court records, was transferred in 1997 to Kennedy and the Baptist church he leads."Our ownership puts an end to that history as far as violence and hatred, racism being practiced in that place and also the recruiting of the Klan," Kennedy said."This is the same place that we had to go up into the balcony to go to the movies before the Klan took it. So there's a lot of history there."But legal documents also indicate that the man who runs the store, 62-year-old John Howard, is entitled to operate his business in the building until he dies. Now the dispute may go to court.Kennedy, 54, has led protests outside the store since it opened but said he's never been able to close it because of the agreement that Howard can run the shop for life.
The reverend envisions the building as a potential future home for his New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church, which now meets in a double-wide trailer.Kennedy claims he can't even visit his own property because Howard won't let him in when he appears in the door. But that didn't happen during a recent visit with an AP reporter and photographer."Reverend Kennedy, where you been hiding?" Howard shouted when the door opened.Inside the store, hooded Klan robes hang on the same rack as the racist T-shirts. Pictures of men, women and children in Klan clothing and pamphlets tell a partial history of the organization.Howard used to own the whole building. When his store first opened, he said, people threw rocks at his windows, spit in his doorway and picketed. A month later, a man intentionally crashed his van through the front windows."If anything turns people off, they shouldn't come in here. It's not a thing in here that's against the law," Howard said, adding that he was once the KKK's grand dragon for South Carolina and North Carolina. To blacks, Kennedy said, the store is a reminder of this region's painful past, which includes the lynching of his great, great uncle by a white mob.The town of Laurens, about 30 miles southeast of Greenville, was named after 18th century slave trader Henry Laurens. Some street addresses are still marked with the letter "C" that once designated black homes as "colored."Racial tension was heightened in recent years when two white female teachers were sentenced for having sex with male students-all of them black.Kennedy has a long history of fighting racial injustice. He protested when a South Carolina county refused to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, and he helped lobby to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse dome. When people in the region allege racism, he rallies attention to the cause.A walk through the neighborhood where he was born shows that he seems a stranger to no one. "Hey Rev," one man says as he strolls by."Pump it up,"Kennedy responds with the phrase he uses at his protests. Mary Redd, who lives across from the house where Kennedy was born, said blacks know to contact the pastor with their problems."And he helps them out," added neighbor Deborah Cheeks. Kennedy said progress has always been slow to come to Laurens."There are two powers in the world: the mind and the sword," he said."In the long run, the sword is defeated by the mind. I want to destroy the concept of hatred."

BIG BROTHER WATCH:Britain makes camera that "sees" under clothes

LONDON-A British company has developed a camera that can detect weapons, drugs or explosives hidden under people's clothes from up to 25 meters away in what could be a breakthrough for the security industry. The T5000 camera, created by a company called ThruVision, uses what it calls "passive imaging technology" to identify objects by the natural electromagnetic rays-known as Terahertz or T-rays-that they emit. The high-powered camera can detect hidden objects from up to 80 feet away and is effective even when people are moving. It does not reveal physical body details and the screening is harmless, the company says. The technology, which has military and civilian applications and could be used in crowded airports, shopping malls or sporting events, will be unveiled at a scientific development exhibition sponsored by Britain's Home Office on March 12-13."Acts of terrorism have shaken the world in recent years and security precautions have been tightened globally,"said Clive Beattie, the chief executive of ThruVision. "The ability to see both metallic and non-metallic items on people out to 25 meters is certainly a key capability that will enhance any comprehensive security system."While the technology may enhance detection, it may also increase concerns that Britain is becoming a surveillance society, with hundreds of thousands of closed-circuit television cameras already monitoring people countrywide every day.ThruVision came up with the technology for the T5000 in collaboration with the European Space Agency and from studying research by astronomers into dying stars. The technology works on the basis that all people and objects emit low levels of electromagnetic radiation. Terahertz rays lie somewhere between infrared and microwaves on the electromagnetic spectrum and travel through clouds and walls.

Gas prices near records, following oil

NEW YORK - Gasoline prices were poised Monday to set a new record at the pump, having surged to within half a cent of their record high of $3.227 a gallon. Oil prices, meanwhile, surged to $107.44, a new inflation-adjusted record and their fifth new high in the last six sessions on an upbeat report on wholesale inventories. The national average price of a gallon of gas rose 0.7 cent overnight to $3.222 a gallon, 69 cents higher than one year ago, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.Last May, prices peaked at $3.227 as surging demand and a string of refinery outages raised concerns about supplies. That record will likely be left in the dust soon as gas prices accelerate toward levels that could approach $4 a gallon, though most analysts believe prices will peak below that psychologically significant mark. In its last forecast, released last month, the Energy Department said prices will likely peak around $3.40 a gallon this spring; a new forecast is due Tuesday.Retail gas prices are following crude oil, jumped 24 percent in a month on its way to setting new inflation-adjusted records four times last week.On Monday, crude prices surged to yet another record after the Commerce Department said wholesale sales jumped by 2.7 percent in January, their biggest increase in four years, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The strong sales report suggested to oil traders that the struggling economy may be doing better than thought.Light, sweet crude for April delivery rose $1.73 to $106.88 on the New York Mercantile Exchange after earlier setting a new trading record of $107.Energy investors shrugged off a relative stabilization of the dollar and a cooling in tensions between Venezuela and its neighbors Colombia and Ecuador. Many analysts believe speculative investing attracted by the weak dollar is the primary reason oil has risen so far so fast in recent months. Crude futures offer a hedge against a falling dollar, and oil futures bought and sold in dollars are more attractive to foreign investors when the dollar is falling."We've got a Fed(eral Reserve) meeting on the 18th that could see a sizeable rate cut," said Brad Samples, an analyst with Summit Energy Services Inc., in Louisville, Ky. "So, it's not over."Indeed, while the dollar fluctuated against the euro on Monday, many investors believe the greenback is likely to keep falling as the Fed continues to cut rates. Many analysts believe the rise in crude prices is not supported by the market's underlying fundamentals, noting that supplies are generally rising while demand is falling."By gobbling up everything in sight, (investors) are pushing food and fuel prices to ruinously high levels," said Peter Beutel, president of the energy risk management firm Cameron Hanover, in a research note.Investors shrugged off a weekend cooling of tensions in South America, where Venezuela said Sunday it was restoring full diplomatic ties with Colombia after they were broken off following a cross-border Colombian attack on a leftist rebel camp in Ecuador.Last week, rebels shut down a Colombian oil pipeline in retaliation for the Colombian raid into Ecuador.Venezuela threatened to slash trade and nationalize Colombian-owned businesses, and Venezuela and Ecuador briefly sent troops to their borders with Colombia. The potential for conflict involving Venezuela, an OPEC member and major U.S. oil supplier, helped push oil higher last week."The Venezuelan production was at risk there," Samples said.Other energy futures were mixed Monday. April heating oil futures rose 2.05 cents to $2.9675 a gallon while April gasoline futures rose 0.37 cent to $2.698 a gallon.April natural gas futures slid 2.6 cents to $9.743 per 1,000 cubic feet.In London, Brent crude futures rose 95 cents to $103.33 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Real Death Star Could Strike Earth

A beautiful pinwheel in space might one day blast Earth with death rays, scientists now report.Unlike the moon-sized Death Star from Star Wars, which has to get close to a planet to blast it, this blazing spiral has the potential to burn worlds from thousands of light-years away."I used to appreciate this spiral just for its beautiful form, but now I can't help a twinge of feeling that it is uncannily like looking down a rifle barrel," said researcher Peter Tuthill, an astronomer at the University of Sydney. The fiery pinwheel in space in question has at its heart a pair of hot, luminous stars locked in orbit with each other. As they circle one another, plumes of streaming gas driven from the surfaces of the stars collide in the intervening space, eventually becoming entangled and twisted into a whirling spiral by the orbits of the stars.
Short fuse
The pinwheel, named WR 104, was discovered eight years ago in the constellation Sagittarius. It rotates in a circle "every eight months, keeping precise time like a jewel in a cosmic clock," Tuthill said. Both the massive stars in WR 104 will one day explode as supernovae. However, one of the pair is a highly unstable star known as a Wolf-Rayet, the last known stable phase in the life of these massive stars right before a supernova."Wolf-Rayet stars are regarded by astronomers as ticking bombs,"Tuthill explained. The 'fuse' for this star "is now very short-to an astronomer-and it may explode any time within the next few hundred thousand years."When the Wolf-Rayet goes supernova, "it could emit an intense beam of gamma rays coming our way," Tuthill said. "If such a 'gamma ray burst' happens, we really do not want Earth to be in the way." Since the initial blast would travel at the speed of light, there would be no warning of its arrival.
Firing line
Gamma ray bursts are the most powerful explosions known in the universe. They can loose as much energy as our sun during its entire 10 billion year lifetime in anywhere from milliseconds to a minute or more. The spooky thing about this pinwheel is that it appears to be a nearly perfect spiral to us, according to new images taken with the Keck Telescope in Hawaii. "It could only appear like that if we are looking nearly exactly down on the axis of the binary system," Tuthill said. The findings are detailed in the March 1 issue of Astrophysical Journal. Unfortunately for us, gamma ray bursts seem to be shot right along the axis of systems. In essence, if this pinwheel ever releases a gamma ray burst, our planet might be in the firing line.
"This is the first object that we know of that might release a gamma ray burst at us," said astrophysicist Adrian Melott at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, who did not participate in this study. "And it's close enough to do some damage."This pinwheel is about 8,000 light years away, roughly a quarter of the way to the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. While this might seem far, "earlier research has suggested that a gamma ray burst-if we are unfortunate enough to be caught in the beam-could be harmful to life on Earth out to these distances," Tuthill said.
What might happen
Although the pinwheel can't blast Earth apart like the Death Star from Star Wars-at least not from 8,000 light years away-it could still cause mass extinction or possibly even threaten life as we know it on our planet.Gamma rays would not penetrate Earth's atmosphere well to burn the ground, but they would chemically damage the stratosphere. Melott estimates that if WR 104 were to hit us with a burst 10 seconds or so long, its gamma rays could deplete about 25 percent of the world's ozone layer, which protects us from damaging ultraviolet rays. In comparison, the recent human-caused thinning of the ozone layer, creating "holes" over the polar regions, have only been depletions of about 3 to 4 percent, he explained."So that would be very bad," Melott told SPACE.com. "You'd see extinctions. You might see food chain collapses in the oceans, might see agricultural crises with starvation."Gamma ray bursts would also trigger smog formation that could blot out sunlight and rain down acid. However, at 8,000 light-years away, "there's probably not a large enough effect there for much of a darkening effect," Melott estimated. "It'd probably cut off 1 or 2 percent of total sunlight. It might cool the climate somewhat, but it wouldn't be a catastrophic ice age kind of thing."
Cosmic ray danger
One unknown about gamma ray bursts is how many particles they spew as cosmic rays. "Normally the gamma ray bursts we see are so far away that magnetic fields out in the universe deflect any cosmic rays we might observe from them, but if a gamma ray burst was pretty close, any high-energy particles would blast right through the galaxy's magnetic field and hit us," Melott said. "Their energies would be so high, they would arrive at almost the same time as the light burst.""The side of the Earth facing the gamma ray burst would experience something like getting irradiated by a not-too-distant nuclear explosion, and organisms on that side might see radiation sickness. And the cosmic rays would make the atmospheric effects of a gamma ray burst worse," Melott added. "But we just don't know how many cosmic rays gamma ray bursts emit, so that's a danger that's not really understood."It remains uncertain just how wide the beams of energy that gamma ray bursts release are. However, any cone of devastation from the pinwheel would likely be several hundred square light-years wide by the time it reached Earth, Melott estimated. Tuthill told SPACE.com "it would be pretty much impossible to for anyone to get far enough to be out of the beam in a spaceship if it really is coming our way."
Don't worry
Still, Tuthill noted this pinwheel might not be the death of us."There are still plenty of uncertainties-the beam could pass harmlessly to the side if we are not exactly on the axis, and nobody is even sure if stars like WR 104 are capable of producing a fully-fledged gamma-ray burst in the first place," he explained.Future research should focus on whether WR 104 really is pointed at Earth and on better understanding how supernovae produce gamma ray bursts. Melott and others have speculated that gamma ray bursts might have caused mass extinctions on Earth. But when it comes to whether this pinwheel might pose a danger to us, "I would worry a lot more about global warming," Melott said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20080310/sc_space/realdeathstarcouldstrikeearth;_ylt=AlsqI9Si9qNzd.FVJzLo8iKs0NUE

Serbian PM quits over Kosovo

Serb government dissolved and election date to be set

BELGRADE-The coalition government of Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica(picture left) was formally dissolved on Monday, opening the way for an early parliamentary election. The decision was taken at a brief cabinet session following Kostunica's announcement on Saturday that the government could not continue in office owing to deep disunity over defending Kosovo versus pursuing a place in the European Union. "The government did not have a united and common policy any more," a statement said, "and this kept it from performing its basic constitutional function, to define and lead Serbia's politics."President Boris Tadic must now disband parliament and set a date for the election, probably on May 11.It will be the most important election since voters ended the era of the late autocrat Slobodan Milosevic in 2000.The vote will be a close race between the Democrats and the nationalist Radicals, the strongest party.Kostunica, whose party lies a distant third, quit after tacitly accusing his coalition partners, the Democrats and the G17 Plus party, of giving up on Kosovo, the 90-percent Albanian province which seceded last month with Western backing. Not all of the Union's 27 members have recognized Kosovo, but Brussels is deploying a supervisory mission that will monitor the territory's progress as an independent state.Tadic, also the head of the Democrats, said on Sunday that attempts to divide Serbs into patriots and traitors over Kosovo would backfire at the polls. A strong and stable Serbia would be in a better position to defend its interests, he added.

Bhutto's party to decide on next Pakistani PM

BHURBAN,Pakistan-Former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif agreed on Sunday to join the late Benazir Bhutto's party in a coalition, raising the prospect of a government hostile to U.S. ally President Pervez Musharraf. In an ominous sign for Musharraf, Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto's widower and the new leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), agreed to restore judges who Musharraf dismissed when he imposed emergency rule in early November. Bhutto's PPP won the most seats in a February 18 general election but not enough to rule alone. Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), or PML (N), party came second and while it had promised to support the PPP,Sharif had not previously confirmed his party would join the PPP in government."The coalition partners...undertake to form a coalition together for a democratic Pakistan," Sharif and Zardari, who took over as PPP leader after Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, said in their agreement.Sharif read out the agreement at a news conference with Zardari in the hill town of Bhurban, near Islamabad. The dismissed judges, including the Supreme Court chief justice, were seen as hostile to Musharraf's October re-election by legislators for a new five-year term as president while he was still army chief. The judges are likely to take up legal challenges to Musharraf if they are restored. The agreement between the PPP and PML (N) would appear to dash any hope that Musharraf might have had that the party that backs him, which came a poor third in the election, might be part of a coalition. The Awami Nationalist Party, an ethnic Pashtun nationalist party which has emerged as a major group in the North West Frontier Province by trouncing hard-line Islamic groups, will also be part of the PPP-led coalition.

RCC WATCH:Vatican lists "new sins," including pollution

VATICAN CITY-Thou shall not pollute the Earth. Thou shall beware genetic manipulation. Modern times bring with them modern sins.[[[So the Vatican has told the faithful that they should be aware of "new" sins such as causing environmental blight.]]]The guidance came at the weekend when Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti, the Vatican's number two man in the sometimes murky area of sins and penance, spoke of modern evils.Asked what he believed were today's "new sins," he told the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano that the greatest danger zone for the modern soul was the largely uncharted world of bioethics."(Within bioethics) there are areas where we absolutely must denounce some violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments and genetic manipulation whose outcome is difficult to predict and control," he said. The Vatican opposes stem cell research that involves destruction of embryos and has warned against the prospect of human cloning.Girotti, in an interview headlined "New Forms of Social Sin," also listed "ecological"offences as modern evils. In recent months, Pope Benedict has made several strong appeals for the protection of the environment, saying issues such as climate change had become gravely important for the entire human race.Under Benedict and his predecessor John Paul, the Vatican has become progressively "green".It has installed photovoltaic cells on buildings to produce electricity and hosted a scientific conference to discuss the ramifications of global warming and climate change, widely blamed on human use of fossil fuels.Girotti, who is number two in the Vatican "Apostolic Penitentiary," which deals with matter of conscience, also listed drug trafficking and social and economic injustices as modern sins.[[[But Girotti also bemoaned that fewer and fewer Catholics go to confession at all.He pointed to a study by Milan's Catholic University that showed that up to 60 percent of Catholic faithful in Italy stopped going to confession.]]][[[[[In the sacrament of Penance, Catholics confess their sins to a priest who absolves them in God's name.]]]]](1){{{{{{But the same study by the Catholic University showed that 30 percent of Italian Catholics believed that there was no need for a priest to be God's intermediary and 20 percent felt uncomfortable talking about their sins to another person.}}}}}}(2)

TERROR WATCH:Qaeda's North Africa wing holding Austria tourists:TV

DUBAI-Al Qaeda's North Africa wing was holding two Austrian tourists it had abducted in Tunisia on February 22, Al Jazeera television reported on Monday. It aired a recording in which a man identified as Salah Abou-Mohammad, a spokesman of al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb, said that the tourists, a man and a woman, were in a good condition."The spokesman said in the tape that the group will announce its conditions for the release of the two tourists at a later stage," a Jazeera presenter said. The channel did not broadcast that part of the recording.Abou-Mohammad identified the tourists as a nurse and a consultant, giving their names with an Arabic accent as Andrea Kobler and Wolfgang Edner."The hand of the mujahideen can reach you wherever you were on Tunisian soil," he said addressing tourists in the North African country, which attracts visitors from several European countries.

Iranian election fails to fire student passions

TEHRAN-Iranian students, who spearheaded a reform movement blunted by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's election in 2005, doubt that voting for a new parliament on Friday can promote real change. Yasaman Nili, 23, who backed moderate former president Mohammad Khatami in previous elections, says she will vote from a sense of civic duty, not because she finds any of the contenders for the 290-seat parliament inspiring."I don't have a favorite candidate whom I know would change things for the better," the social science student told Reuters at her apartment in wealthy north Tehran."At the same time, things won't improve if everyone draws back from voting. If you decide to be indifferent, you have no right to object to problems," said Nili, who studies at Tehran's Alameh Tabatabai university. The March 14 election will show whether Ahmadinejad's popularity has waned since he won power on promises of sharing Iran's oil wealth more fairly.Ahmadinejad, criticized for his handling of an economy awash with petrodollars but struggling with double-digit inflation, has been accused of introducing tighter social restrictions and a crackdown on reformist students. In the late 1990s, students formed a bastion of support for the social and political reforms promoted by Khatami but many students became disillusioned as reforms failed to materialize.Moderates trying to make a comeback in next Friday's election complain that the odds are stacked against them because a hardline vetting body has barred some of their candidates.

RCC WATCH:Nicaraguans celebrate mass for dogs

MASAYA, Nicaragua-Hundreds of dogs, many dressed as babies or clowns, were taken to celebrate mass in this Nicaraguan town on Sunday, an annual ritual where the owners pray for their pets to be cured or avoid falling ill.A long queue of Catholics, carrying their pets or leading them on leashes, waited their turn to pass by an image of a saint in a tiny church in this town 20 miles to the south of the Nicaragua capital, Managua. The faithful thank the saint for curing their pets or ask for the dogs to be protected from illness. The town's priest always conducts a special canine mass."We brought him so he does not get sick," said local resident Nora Espinosa, talking about her six-month-old Basset Hound, dressed in a soccer outfit.Locals say the tradition goes back to the colonial period after the Spanish conquest.
