Canada terror suspect faces first legal setback

OTTAWA-A Canadian software developer designed a remote bomb detonator he called the "hi-fi digimonster" to be used in planned attacks in the United Kingdom, an Ottawa court heard on Monday. In a highly detailed opening statement, prosecutor David McKercher said Momin Khawaja, 29, was "directly involved" in the British bomb plot, and met with members of a terrorist cell during visits to the U.K. in 2003 and 2004.Khawaja also attended a paramilitary training camp in Pakistan, where he learned how to use an assault rifle and rocket-propelled grenade launcher, McKercher told the court.McKercher said the court would hear evidence during the trial that Khawaja was part of "a plan to build and detonate a 600-kilogram (1,300 pound) ammonium nitrate-based fertilizer bomb that could cause massive destruction and loss of life."He faces seven charges centering on the use of explosives, participating in a terrorist group and financing a terrorist group, and could face life in prison if found guilty. The clean-shaven Khawaja waved and smiled to a member of the public from the prisoner's dock before pleading not guilty to all counts. He wore a dark grey suit and his hair was pulled back into two braids behind his ears.British police have already named Khawaja as co-conspirator in the case of five men who were jailed for life last year for a thwarted plan to bomb nightclubs, trains and a shopping center in Britain. He did not stand trial in Britain, but has been in jail for more than four years as his trial was delayed by legal wrangling.
