LEWDNESS WATCH:Wichita law pushing adult businesses to the limits

Three sexually oriented businesses in Wichita, Kansas, that don't want to be placed in a special city zoning area are resisting the law.The ordinance-which the Christian Post reports requires such businesses to be 500 feet away from churches, schools, and like businesses-took effect in January after passage in 2005 and a two-year grace period. Community activist Jan Beemer of Operation Southwind, a grassroots decency coalition, helped push the city to adopt the ordinance. She says the new zoning laws required nine businesses to move because they were in the wrong zone. But even after two years' advance notice, only four of the nine shops have closed and moved. Two are still negotiating, and three are refusing to act.Beemer says city officials have stated publicly how they plan to deal with the situation."The city will, on their own, just test the constitutionality of the zoning ordinance before they press charges to enforce it," explains Beemer."If, in court, the judge rules it constitutional, then they will press charges against the three stores."City officials reportedly expected a legal defense of the new zoning law would be necessary once it actually went into effect.
