Cuba: Critical Elections Called for January

Cuba will hold elections on Jan. 20 to choose delegates for provincial assemblies and the National Assembly, the official newspaper Granma reported, in [[[what could be the next step toward formally ending President Fidel Castro’s 48-year rule. ]]]For Mr. Castro to continue as president, he must hold a seat in the National Assembly. “It will be important to see if Fidel’s name appears on the ballot,” said Jorge Piñon, a senior researcher at Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami. “This is key to whether he remains president.” Mr. Castro, 81, handed interim power to his brother Raúl, 76, after gastrointestinal surgery last year.
