Students Participate In Freedom Walk To Mark 9/11:Many Children Do Not Remember Tragedy

A few hundred schoolchildren joined their parents and others to mark the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on Tuesday in the first annual Freedom Walk to honor emergency personnel and the military."The reason we're here today is not really celebration, it is remembrance," U.S. Navy Capt. Don Hodge said.Remembrance of what happened on 2001, in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania-places far away from Hawaii."The bottom line is showing the soldiers and their families that, hey, we're to support them, regardless of our views of what's going on," Tri-West Health Care sponsor Karl Kiokawa said. Most of the participants in the walk were children from Holy Family Catholic Academy, Saint George's Preschool and Nimitz Elementary School near Hickam Air Force Base. Many of the kids have family members who are military, police or firefighters. It has been six years since the 9/11 attacks, which means that many of the school children taking part in the event were either too young to remember or were not born. For seventh- and eighth-graders, it is something they lived through, even if they cannot remember it all."All I can remember is that my family was watching the news a lot," Holy Family Catholic Academy student Vincent Sumbicay said.
PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii-"They remember watching their parents with tears pour down their eyes, but they were confused, and they asked a lot of questions. Over the years, they've learned what happened, and they know it's in their lifetime," Holy Family Catholic Academy teacher Paula Waller said.
