Poll of Americans Finds Doubts About Islam, Mormonism

WASHINGTON - A new poll suggests that Americans have increasingly negative opinions about Islam, view Mormons as Christians but different, and approve of Pope Benedict. The survey of 3,000 adults was conducted last month for the Pew Research Center and the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. Its margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points.Forty-five percent of those surveyed said Islam is more likely than other faiths to encourage violence among its followers, up from 36 percent two years ago.A slim majority, 52 percent, said Mormonism is a Christian religion. Yet among non-Mormon believers, more than six in ten said Mormonism and their own religion are very different. The poll also found that Pope Benedict has a 73 percent approval rating. His predecessor, Pope John Paul II, garnered 86 percent favorable ratings in 1996.
