Muslim congressman joins anti-Semitism panel:Move follows his comparison of President Bush, Hitler

A civil rights group is questioning whether U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., a Muslim who has compared President Bush to Adolf Hitler and has spoken for a group that endorses the death of Jews, should be serving on a congressional committee dealing with anti-Semitism."It is highly offensive for a congressional task force on anti-Semitism to allow a man that willingly speaks in front of anti-Semitic groups to be associated with its organization," said Joe Kaufman, president of Americans Against Hate, which also calls itself a terror watchdog organization. "[The Congressional Task Force on Anti-Semitism] needs to end its relationship with Ellison immediately."On his website, Ellison has announced his decision to join the task force for the 110th Congress."The Taskforce promotes religious tolerance throughout the world, and brings a strong voice in the United States Congress to those whose basic religious rights and freedoms have been persecuted," he said. "I am honored to join the Congressional Anti-Semitism Task Force because it embodies the ideals and principles that have guided and shaped my life," he said.Kaufman, however, noted that Ellison has spoken several times for the Muslim American Society's Minnesota chapter, which promotes the Quran on its website, including statements such as: "Fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, an (sic) seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war).""I contacted the congressman's office; they won't give me the time of day," he said.A WND message left with the congressman's office seeking a comment also was not returned."As far as I can tell, he refuses to condemn this organization. I guess I understand," Kaufman told WND. "Why would he condemn a group he supports?"But he said having someone who supports a group that appears to advocate for the death of "pagans" on a congressional panel dealing with anti-Semitism "certainly is beyond the bounds of any type of decency."When Keith Ellison ran for office, he denounced the anti-Semitism of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam, a group that he was previously affiliated with. We demand that he do the same to the Muslim American Society," said Kaufman. "It is not only improper for a United States representative to participate with such groups, but it is a danger to national security."Other statements found on the MAS Minnesota site include: "Give tidings … of a painful doom to those who disbelieve" as well as the instruction to "fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you."Ellison's announcement of his addition to the panel said he recognized that the task force's charge will include "to bring to light numerous acts of anti-Semitism occurring around the world."
