Pressure mounts on North Korea to release Christian prisoner

From the grassroots level to some of the highest levels of the U.S. government, efforts continue to secure the release of a North Korean Christian facing death for his faith. At least one congressional leader,a presidential candidate, and concerned Christians are putting pressure on the North Korean government to release Son Jong Nam.Son Jong Nam awaits public execution in North Korea because of his faith in Christ. Authorities arrested Son in early 2006 after he visited China and returned to North Korea. He was accused of meeting with what authorities described as "questionable people."The case has attracted the attention of GOP presidential candidate and Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas), who has written U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about the issue. U.S. Congressman Tom Lentos (D-California) has also called for Son's release in letters to Ban and to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il.Todd Nettleton is with Voice of the Martyrs (VOM), which is publicizing the story. He says as far as Christianity is concerned, North Korea is the most closed country on Earth."Because of the nature of their society, which deifies Kim Jong Il and [his father and predecessor] Kim Il Sung, being a Christian is not just a religious act in North Korea, it's really considered a treasonous act," Nettleton explains. But the VOM spokesman is hopeful the involvement of Brownback and Lantos has put the spotlight on the case. "It could totally change the outcome for Son Jong Nam,"he remarks."You know, it's very rare to have this kind of information out of North Korea. It's very rare to have a name and a face of someone who's been sentenced to be executed while they're still alive."VOM is calling on people throughout the U.S. and the world to write letters to North Korean officials calling for Son's release.
