Shambo monks vow to defend cattle

Hindu monks have said they are prepared to defend more of their cattle from slaughter after one of their temple bullocks was put down.A post-mortem examination on Shambo found he had lesions typical of bovine tuberculosis.It means other cattle at the Skanda Vale religious community in Carmarthenshire,west Wales, face possible slaughter.The monks' attempt to spare Shambo from the Welsh Assembly Government's slaughter policy ended at the Court of Appeal this week.On Thursday, three months after Shambo failed a routine TB test,officials were denied access to Skanda Vale when they came to remove him.Returning with a court warrant and police back-up,they had to break a chain to unlock the gates so a cattle trailer could be towed on to the site.Dozens of worshippers blocked the way to Shambo's pen by spending the day chanting prayers in front of him. extraordinary scenes,police had to carry some people away after they refused to move.A Skanda Vale spokesman said another bullock and a water buffalo could be at risk.He said:"I have no doubt they are going to do the same again.Why would they suddenly change their mind?"We will do the same as we did on Thursday-we can't assist them or help them in any way.
