PESTILENCE WATCH:Sexually Transmitted Disease Rates Grow In Wash

OLYMPIA,Wash.-The state Department of Health reports that gonorrhea cases increased by 13 percent in 2006 over 2005.
The agency's STD epidemiologist Mark Stenger said reported gonorrhea cases are the highest rates state officials have seen in 13 years.The department said Cowlitz County showed the highest rate of gonorrhea infection last year,more than three times the state average of 66.4 cases per 100,000.Overall,more than 22,000 cases of chlamydia,gonorrhea and syphilis infection were reported to local health agencies in Washington in 2006.Chlamydia infection was the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease among Washington residents in 2006.In 2006, syphilis infection in Washington continued to increase steadily with 182 cases of primary and secondary syphilis,the most infectious stages of disease.The department says recent cases have primarily been diagnosed among gay men and their partners in urban centers.Secretary of Health Mary Selecky emphasizes sexually transmitted diseases aren't just a big-city problem.
