AT&T Fires Employee for Not Working on Sunday

AT&T had fired an employee on March 5, 2007. According to charges filed by former employee Bob Dosee, he was fired because he would not work on Sundays, a day of religious observance in his Christian faith.“AT&T’s refusal to accommodate Mr. Dosee is a direct violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” said Hiram Sasser, Director of Litigation for the Liberty Legal Institute, who is representing Dosee.Dosee, an Air Force veteran, began working for AT&T in 1996 as a customer service technician. Following in an in-depth Bible study on the topic of the “Sabbath,” he was convicted that working on Sundays was a violation of his faith. This did not become an issue until December 2006, when AT&T began scheduling him to work on Sundays despite Dosee’s request for Sundays off. AT&T then fired him in response to his refusal to work.“It appears that AT&T, for no other reason than pure religious hostility, refused to accommodate Mr. Dosee’s religious practice even though it was easy for them to do so,” said Mr. Sasser. “AT&T should be ashamed of its own intolerance.”
