British Girl Takes Chastity Ring Case to Britain's High Court

A teenage girl is taking her case to Britain’s High Court. Lydia Playfoot, 16, was banned from wearing a chastity ring in class and is claiming that the school violated her religious freedom.Playfoot is a student at the Millais School in Horsham, about 40 miles south of London. She wears a ring as a sign of her commitment to abstinence from sex until marriage. The school claims the ring falls outside of its uniform policy, but makes exceptions for Muslims wearing head scarves and Sikhs wearing steel bracelets.According to Headmaster Leon Nettley, the chastity rings do not have an integral part in the Christian faith.Playfoot’s lawyer Paul Diamond argued before the court that the schools decision violated her freedom of religion. “Secular authorities and institutions cannot be arbiters of religious faith,” he said.“At my school, Muslims are allowed to wear headscarves and other faiths can wear bangles and other types of jewelry and it feels like Christians are being discriminated against,” Playfoot said.In a written statement, Nettley claims the ring “is not a Christian symbol, and is not required to be worn by any branch within Christianity.”
