DECEPTION WATCH:Preacher receives sentence of life plus 51 years, for killing his wife...

MOBILE-An Alabama evangelist who authorities say terrorized his family while preaching at revivals has been sentenced to life plus 51 years in prison after being convicted of killing his wife and storing her body in a home freezer.Circuit Judge John Lockett imposed the sentence Thursday on Anthony Hopkins, 39, who showed no remorse during the proceeding. He got the maximum sentence of life for murder and additional time for convictions including sodomy and sexual abuse.Assistant District Attorney Ashley Rich called Hopkins "evil of the worst kind."She said he taught the eight children in his home things about the Bible that were not true and that helped him get away with his crimes for years. During Hopkins' trial in April, prosecutors said he killed his 36-year-old wife, Arletha Hopkins, in 2004 after she caught him molesting a girl, then stuffed her body in a freezer at their home in north Mobile. Investigators discovered the body in 2008 after a young woman abused by Hopkins told child advocates about it, authorities said.Police arrested Hopkins while he was preaching at a revival in south Alabama...

Moms leave Iran, but jailed Americans not freed

TEHRAN, Iran – The mothers of three Americans jailed in Iran for 10 months left for home Friday, getting one last chance to embrace their children but failing to secure their immediate release. In a glimmer of hope, Iran announced that two of its nationals held in Iraq by U.S. forces for years were freed Friday. The release raised the possibility that a behind-the-scenes swap was in the offing or that their release was a gesture of goodwill in an attempt to free the Americans. The Iranians' release "may have some diplomatic effect on this case," the Americans' lawyer, Masoud Shafii, told The Associated Press. The U.S. has said it is not offering a direct swap, and Iranian officials made no public connection between the freed Iranians and the Americans...

RCC WATCH:Brazil orders Polish priest arrested in abuse case

SAO PAULO-A judge in Brazil has ordered the arrest of a Polish priest suspected of sexually abusing a teenager in a Rio de Janeiro suburb, authorities said Friday.State prosecutors have accused Marcin Michael Strachanowski, 44, of handcuffing the 16-year-old former altar boy to a bed three years ago in the parish house where the priest lived and threatening to kill the youth if he spoke of the abuse."I already know the flowers I will place on your coffin," Strachanowski warned, according to prosecutors. The Polish priest was suspended from his duties after the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro learned of the order for his arrest, church spokesman Adionel Carlos da Cunha said in a statement issued Friday. The judge issued the order on Thursday. The archdiocese "expresses its regret over what happened, especially with the people involved and possible victims," he said....

Car bomb in Shiite town near Baghdad kills 23

BAGHDAD – A car bomb exploded Friday at an open-air market crowded with shoppers in a Shiite town northeast of Baghdad, killing 23 people and wounding more than 50, Iraqi police and hospital officials said. The bombing struck the town of Khalis, a Shiite enclave 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Baghdad surrounded by the largely Sunni province of Diyala. It is a former al-Qaida in Iraq stronghold that has seen several powerful blasts, one a twin bombing on a restaurant in March that killed 57.Most of those killed Friday were sitting in a cafe in the center of the market that was reduced to rubble."There was a sudden explosion followed by heavy shooting with smoke, fire and yelling, then sirens, ambulances, police," said Yasser Mohammed, a 28-year-old blacksmith who walked by the cafe minutes before the blast."There was a frightening scene, mostly women running to the scene I assume to look for their husbands or sons who go to the cafe to play dominos, backgammon, or poker"...

British ministers on Afghan visit want troops out

KABUL-Senior British cabinet ministers, led by new Foreign Secretary William Hague, arrived in Afghanistan Saturday with a warning that Britain wants to withdraw its troops as soon as possible.Hague, Defence Secretary Liam Fox and International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell are set to meet President Hamid Karzai in their first visit to to the country since the coalition government took power in London this month.Hague described Afghanistan-where around 10,000 British troops are helping fight a Taliban-led insurgency well into its ninth year-as "our most urgent priority" in comments released from London as the party touched down.In an interview with The Times newspaper before arriving in Kabul, Fox made clear the visit would focus on speeding up the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan, and that no new troops would be deployed."We need to accept we are at the limit of numbers now and I would like the forces to come back as soon as possible," he was quoted as saying."We have to reset expectations and timelines."National security is the focus now. We are not a global policeman. We are not in Afghanistan for the sake of the education policy in a broken 13th-century country. We are there so the people of Britain and our global interests are not threatened," Fox said...

Protesters take aim at Canada G20, G8 summits

TORONTO-Canadians got a taste this week of how far activists might go to protest against next month's G20 summit in Toronto, with the firebombing of a local bank branch in the nation's capital. Police are still investigating the attack on a Royal Bank of Canada branch in Ottawa, which may have been the work of an anarchist group protesting against the June G8 and G20 gatherings.A special task force in charge of security for the international summits is monitoring the investigation into Tuesday's early morning fire, which caused an estimated C$500,000 in damages and left the bank's glass storefront broken and blackened."We are certainly monitoring the situation to see if there's any kind of potential threat for the G8 or G20," said Julie Morel, a spokeswoman for the special task force, which is made up from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Toronto Police Service and other security and law enforcement partners."The Integrated Security Unit is monitoring any potential threat to the G8 and G20 summit and of course we are prepared to deal with any possible threats"...

Senate Passes Wall Street Permanent Bailout Bill, It’s a Job Killer..!

The Senate passes the Wall Street Reform Bill (S. 3217) by a 59-39 vote, if it passes the House it will kill jobs by making it difficult for small businesses to succeed and it will give permanent and unlimited bailout authority for the big banks on Wall Street. It would also do nothing to solve problems in the financial system and won’t prevent the next financial crisis.Republican Senator David Vitter: “Congressional Democrats and the Obama Administration want to create a permanent bailout mechanism all while spouting their rhetoric of getting tough on Wall Street, but if you look at who is already lining up to support their ‘reform’ measure it’s a who’s who of the big banks that have already received the taxpayer bailout the first time.” Democrat Congressman Brad Sherman: “There are serious problems with the Dodd bill. The Dodd bill has unlimited executive bailout authority. That’s something Wall Street desperately wants but doesn’t dare ask for”...

'Perfect storm' as market tremors hit China, Europe and the US

"It is the perfect storm," said Andrew Roberts, credit strategist at RBS. "People have been too complacent about risky assets. This is a global deflation scare and people need to get ready for falls in US and European bond yields to 2pc."The global stock market sell-off continued for a third day on Friday. London's FTSE 100 dropped 2pc to trade below 5,000 for the first time since last October. Germany lost 2.4pc, France 2.2pc, Japan 2.5pc, while Wall Street opened lower.Investors shrugged off German approval of a $1 trillion (£700m) eurozone rescue package, doubtful that it can resolve the debt crisis. World equities are now heading for the biggest monthly fall since October 2008....

Angela Merkel's ban on short-selling is just a distraction from the horror to come
"Money can't buy you friends, but it does get you a better class of enemy" – Spike Milligan
For Angela Merkel, leader of the eurozone's richest country, a queue is forming of high-quality adversaries. As she tips German Geld und Gut into the furnace of a rescue package for the euro, while going it alone in a misguided ban on market "manipulators", the brass-neck Chancellor has infuriated domestic voters, angered her EU partners (in particular the French) and invited the so-called wolf pack of global traders to do its worst. In one respect, Mrs Merkel is right: "The euro is in danger… if the euro fails, then Europe fails." What she has not yet admitted publicly is that the main cause of the single currency's peril appears beyond her control and therefore her impetuous response to its crisis of confidence is doomed to fail...

German lawmakers approve euro rescue package...

BERLIN-German lawmakers on Friday approved their country's share of the massive rescue deal to save the euro and contain the debt crisis, as EU finance ministers gathered in Brussels to create new budget rules to win back financial markets' confidence. The lower house of parliament voted 319-73 with 195 abstentions in favor of the plan - sending it to the upper house, which represents Germany's 16 states and where Chancellor Angela Merkel's center-right government currently controls a majority, for a decision later in the day.The euro750 billion (nearly $1 trillion) package was drawn up two weeks ago. Germany, Europe's biggest economy, is to contribute between euro123 billion and euro147.6 billion in loan guarantees. It comes hard on the heels of a separate package to rescue Greece - which was already unpopular with Germans....

EU nations back tougher sanctions to combat debt...

BRUSSELS – European Union finance ministers backed tougher sanctions to prevent them running up too much debt in the hopes of winning back market confidence and getting a handle on the debt crisis that is threatening the euro. The European Union's president Herman Van Rompuy said the talks Friday showed that "it was very clear that there was a broad consensus on the principle of having sanctions"-both financial and political.Current limits on debt and deficits are backed up on paper by heavy fines, which have never been imposed-effectively allowing Greece and others to ignore them and build up massive debt.Van Rompuy gave no details of new sanctions because officials from the EU's 27 governments, the European Central Bank and the European Commission are only starting work on changes to widely flouted EU budget rules. EU leaders are due to decide on long-term reforms at an October summit...

Fed official:"Europe's crisis poses risks to US"

WASHINGTON-Europe's debt crisis poses serious risks to the unfolding economic recoveries in the United States and around the globe, a Federal Reserve official said Thursday.Federal Reserve Governor Daniel Tarullo, in remarks to a House subcommittee, said the timing of Europe's problems on the heels of the global financial crisis is a "potentially serious setback."If the crisis were to crimp lending and the flow of credit globally, triggering more financial turmoil, that would endanger both the U.S. and global recoveries, he said."Although we view such a development as unlikely, the swoon in global financial markets earlier this month suggests it is not out of the question," said Tarullo. As he testified, Wall Street took another nosedive on European debt fears. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 376 points when the market closed...

"From here on I see things getting worse."Prices in both stocks and commodities are likely to take a hit, and investors may only be safe in cash and other safe havens. House votes to expand national DNA arrest database...

Millions of Americans arrested for but not convicted of crimes will likely have their DNA forcibly extracted and added to a national database, according to a bill approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday.By a 357 to 32 vote, the House approved legislation that will pay state governments to require DNA samples, which could mean drawing blood with a needle, from adults "arrested for" certain serious crimes. Not one Democrat voted against the database measure, which would hand out about $75 million to states that agree to make such testing mandatory."We should allow law enforcement to use all the technology available to them...to reduce expensive and unjust false convictions, bring closure to victims by solving cold cases, better identify criminals, and keep those who commit violent crime from walking the streets," said Rep. Harry Teague, the New Mexico Democrat who sponsored the bill...

Would ewe believe it...?:"Sheep sent for CT scans to produce better meat"

We've long had meat in a can, but now farmers are bringing us meat that has had a scan.
A CT scanner is being used on sheep in a quest to breed the leanest lambs.
The machine, originally designed to detect human tumors, uses a series of X-rays to create a detailed image of the animals' bodies - letting farmers analyse their flock and pick the best rams and ewes for breeding.Sheep are mildly sedated by a vet and then strapped to a conveyor, with head cushion for comfort, before passing slowly through the scanner. The scans mean producers can breed and sell healthier sheep that produce the leanest meat. It is hoped the technique will help revitalise the £822m-a-year lamb industry, which has seen sales fall in recent years....

Scientist accused of playing God after creating artificial life by making designer microbe from scratch - but could it wipe out humanity...?

Scientists today lined up to air their fears over a genome pioneer's claims that he has created artificial life in the laboratory.
In a world first, which has alarmed many, maverick biologist and billionaire entrepreneur Craig Venter, built a synthetic cell from scratch.
The creation of the new life form, which has been nicknamed 'Synthia', paves the way for customised bugs that could revolutionise healthcare and fuel production, according to its maker.
But there are fears that the research, detailed in the journal Science, could be abused to create the ultimate biological weapon, or that one mistake in a lab could lead to millions being wiped out by a plague, in scenes reminiscent of the Will Smith film I Am Legend....

American scientist who created artificial life denies 'playing God'

The creation of the ''synthetic cell'', described as a ''landmark'' by one British expert, is a 15-year dream come true for maverick genetics entrepreneur Dr Venter. He breathed life into a bacterium using genes assembled in the laboratory in a development with major implications for genomics, including the manufacture of artificial organisms designed for specific tasks such as making vaccines or cleaning up pollution...

Roman Catholic Church warns cell scientists not to play God

ROME-Catholic Church officials said Friday the recent creation by researchers of the first synthetic cell can be a positive development if correctly used, but warned scientists that only God can create life.Vatican and Italian church officials were mostly cautious in their first reaction to the announcement from the United States that researchers had produced a living cell powered by manmade DNA. They warned scientists of the ethical responsibility of scientific progress and said that the manner in which the innovation is applied in the future will be crucial."If it is used toward the good, to treat pathologies, we can only be positive" in our assessment, Monsignor Rino Fisichella, the Vatican's top bioethics official, told state-run TV. "If it turns out not to be ... useful to respect the dignity of the person, then our judgment would change.""We look at science with great interest. But we think above all about the meaning that must be given to life," said Fisichella, who heads Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life. "We can only reach the conclusion that we need God, the origin of life"...

DNA revolt...?:Scientists create first synthetic cell

U.S. scientists have announced that they've produced a living cell powered by man-made DNA. The team said they have succeeded in transplanting synthetic DNA into a host cell. The synthetic cell looks identical to the 'wild type'
Scientists in the US have succeeded in developing the first living cell to be controlled entirely by synthetic DNA.The researchers constructed a bacterium's "genetic software" and transplanted it into a host cell. The resulting microbe then looked and behaved like the species "dictated" by the synthetic DNA.The advance, published in Science, has been hailed as a scientific landmark, but critics say there are dangers posed by synthetic organisms. Some also suggest that the potential benefits of the technology have been over-stated.But the researchers hope eventually to design bacterial cells that will produce medicines and fuels and even absorb greenhouse gases...

Clinton:"North Korea must face consequences for attack"

TOKYO – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday the evidence is "overwhelming" that a North Korean submarine sank a South Korean warship and the communist country must face international consequences for its actions.Speaking in Tokyo at the outset of a three-nation Asian trip, Clinton said the U.S., Japan, South Korea and China are consulting on an appropriate reaction to an international investigation that blamed North Korea for the incident. She said the report proves a North Korean sub fired a torpedo that sank the ship, the Cheonan, in March and that it could no longer be "business as usual" in dealing with the matter. While it was "premature" to discuss exact options or actions that will be taken in response, Clinton said it was "important to send a clear message to North Korea that provocative actions have consequences"...

TEHRAN, Iran – Witnesses at a Tehran hotel say three Americans jailed in Iran for 10 months have met with their mothers again — the second such meeting arranged by authorities since the mothers' arrival in the country earlier this week. The meeting on Friday afternoon was more private than the widely broadcast emotional first reunion on Thursday. No cameras or media were allowed this time into the high-rise Esteghlal Hotel that overlooks the Evin Prison, where the trio have been held since their detention last July....

Iranians React to Visit of American Mothers...

The visit to Iran of the mothers of the three American hikers, Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer, and Josh Fattal, held captive in Tehran, was one of the top stories in the Iranian blogosphere on Thursday. One comment, posted in Persian from someone in Iran, after seeing photos of the mothers embracing their children, was “It burns your heart. If torturing Iranian mothers was not enough, now this.” There was an outpouring of sympathy on this website for the mothers, Nora Shourd, Cindy Hickey and Laura Fattal, clad in severe black chadors, as they were granted visitation with their sons and daughter, held for ten months in jail in Iran, accused of espionage. They do not know when they will get to see their children next.Another comment from a Persian website: “how awful they must feel right now? Only God knows.” When word the women would be granted visas to visit Iran and see their children, opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, in a meeting with relatives of Iranian political prisoners, applauded this. But he also asked why Iranian mothers, whose children are in prison for their role in the pro-democracy demonstrations in Iran, are not given access to their children. By law in Iran, family members are supposed to have that right. But according to reports, many have had to wait months before getting to see their children....

Indonesian film portrays Obama's early years...

BANDUNG, Indonesia-Young Barry Obama is struggling with his pingpong shot.Or rather, 12-year-old Hasan Faruq Ali is struggling to play left-handed in imitation of the character he is portraying in a new Indonesian film, "Little Obama.""Hasan has the walk, he has the posture of Barry," said Slamet Djanuadi, a consultant on the film and a childhood friend of President Barack Obama when he lived in Indonesia from 1967 to 1971."But Barry was a better pingpong player," he laughed, watching Hasan hit the ball off the table. The movie, produced by Multivision Plus, Indonesia's largest production company, will premiere in Indonesia on June 17, the week of Obama's anticipated visit to the country. The president postponed a planned visit in March to push through health care legislation. The film tells the story of Obama's childhood in Jakarta, where he lived with his mother and Indonesian stepfather from age 6 to 10....
PS:The movie should be called:"Little Soetoro"cause that is his real name...Barry Soetoro among other 5 names...Till he doesn't show his birth certificate I think we all conclude he is still indonesian.BUT of course he won't...we all know WHY.

WASHINGTON-President Barack Obama Wednesday deployed the full pomp of a White House state dinner for only the second time, honoring Mexico's President Felipe Calderon with a sumptuous menu and elaborate decor. The White House was also road testing unspecified extra security measures, after the inaugural Obama state dinner last year for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was marred when a socialite couple gatecrashed the festivities.Key members of the US-Mexico community were expected among 200 guests at the glamorous black-tie gala evening at the White House, as well as actresses Whoopi Goldberg and Eva Longoria, and Mexican billionaire business mogul Carlos Slim.R&B Diva Beyonce topped the entertainment bill for the dinner, taking place in the East Room of the White House, with the action later moving to a luxury marquee on the South Lawn of the presidential mansion....

French Muslims in face-covering veils speak out as bill to ban the attire goes to Cabinet

PARIS-One runs her own company, another is a housewife and a third, a divorcee, raises her children by herself. Like nearly 2,000 other Muslim women who freely wear face-covering veils anywhere in France, their lives will soon change and they are worried. On Wednesday, French Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie presented a draft law to the Cabinet banning Muslim veils that cover the face, the first formal step in a process to forbid such attire in all public places in France. It calls for euro150 ($185) fines and, in some cases, citizenship classes for women who run afoul of the law.The measure notably creates a new offense, "inciting to hide the face," and anyone convicted of forcing a woman to wear such a veil risks a year in prison and a euro15,000 ($18,555) fine, according to a copy of the text. "Citizenship should be experienced with an uncovered face," President Nicolas Sarkozy told the Cabinet meeting, in remarks released by his office. "There can be no other solution but a ban in all public places." Although the Interior Ministry estimates there are only 1,900 women in France who cover their faces with veils, the planned law would be another defining moment for Islam here as the nation tries to bring its Muslim population — at least 5 million, the largest in western Europe — into the mainstream, even by force of law....

Global Cooling Is Coming -- and Beware the Big Chill, Scientist Warns

The hottest new trend in climate change may be global cooling, some researchers say.Contrary to the commonly held scientific conclusion that the Earth is getting warmer, Dr. Don Easterbrook, emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University and author of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, has unveiled evidence for his prediction that global cooling is coming soon.“Rather than global warming at a rate of 1 F per decade, records of past natural cycles indicate there may be global cooling for the first few decades of the 21st century to about 2030,” said Easterbrook, speaking on a scientific panel discussion with other climatologists. This, he says, will likely be followed by “global warming from about 2030 to 2060,” which will then be followed by another cooling spell from 2060 to 2090.Easterbrook spoke before a group of about 700 scientists and government officials at the fourth International Conference on Climate Change. The conference is presented annually in Chicago by the Heartland Institute, a conservative nonprofit think tank that actively questions the theory of man's role in global warming. Last year the Institute published Climate Change Reconsidered, a comprehensive reply to the United Nations' latest report on climate change."Global warming is over -- at least for a few decades," Easterbrook told conference attendees. "However, the bad news is that global cooling is even more harmful to humans than global warming, and a cause for even greater concern"...

Clark a favorite of President Obama and first lady Michelle. He was given the unpaid honor of being a guest chef, working the state dinner-the second of the Obama administration-alongside of White House House chef Cristeta Comerford. Commenting on Rand Paul’s historic victory in the Kentucky primary, the Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine called the would be Senator an “extreme candidate”, while other Democrats suggested Paul would be an easy target for them in the November general election. While Kaine was happy to note that the result was a “stunning loss” and a “show of weakness” for the GOP establishment in the form of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and the hand picked candidate, Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson, the DNC head also took the opportunity to slur Rand Paul’s anti-establishment credentials.“Unfortunately for Republicans, ordinary Americans are unlikely to be receptive to extreme candidates like Rand Paul in the general election this November,”Kaine said in a statement.“Rand Paul’s positions fail to resonate beyond the far-right Republican segment of the electorate that supported him tonight,” Kaine also stated....

OBAMA'S GRANNY:"Barack is going to be the President of America, which means he’s an American."

It was an inspired choice by The Great Lakes University: An honorary doctorate for Sarah Obama, grandmother of kings and a pillar of the community. The grand old lady is smart. By smart, we are not referring to her sense of fashion which is so sharp and refined it shames many ‘real’ PhD holders, both male and female, with their unkempt beards, ill-fitting suits and drab dresses. The funny thing about Granny Sarah is that while she never stepped inside a classroom, she is better collected and unleashes more reasoned statements than Kenyan politicians who went to some of the finest learning institutions in the world...
