North Korea deploys fighters ahead of rocket launch

SEOUL-North Korea has deployed a squadron of MiG-23 fighters near a northeastern launch site from where it plans to launch a rocket between Saturday and Wednesday, Yonhap News Agency reported Thursday. "North Korea has deployed a squadron of MiG-23 fighter jets closer to the east coast from its air base in North Hamkyong Province," a South Korean government source told Yonhap.The location of the deployment is known to be Eorang air force base near Chongjin, not far from Hwadaegun in which the rocket launch site is located, said Yonhap. Another source said the deployment of the fighters appears to be in response to Japan's move to destroy the North Korean rocket or its debris in the event that the launch fails and it falls onto Japanese territory, Yonhap said."It is predicted the MiG fighter jets will be deployed back to their air base after the rocket launch," the source said.Japan is concerned that if the launch fails, the rocket or its debris, such as its boosters, may fall somewhere in northeastern Japan, over which the rocket is expected to fly.
