Iran Tries U.S. Journalist Behind Closed Doors

TEHRAN,Iran-Iran's judiciary spokesman says imprisoned American journalist Roxana Saberi stood trial behind closed doors and a verdict is expected within two to three weeks.Ali Reza Jamshidi told reporters Tuesday that 31-year-old Saberi was tried Monday at Iran's Revolutionary Court, which handles national security cases.Saberi was charged with spying for the U.S.-a more serious accusation than earlier statements by Iranian officials that the dual Iranian-American citizen was arrested for working without press credentials.Her father and her lawyer couldn't immediately be reached for comment.Saberi has been living in Iran for six years. She has reported from there for several news organizations, including National Public Radio.Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for her release and President Obama has recently extended offers for improved diplomatic ties with Iran."She has an Iranian citizenship, passport and an Iranian national identity card. She has entered Iran as an Iranian citizen and if she has another citizenship, we are unaware of it and it has no effect on how we will proceed with her case," AFP quoted Haddad."There is no evidence that she has another citizenship and the investigation is still on."
