Hezbollah says it can ensure unity cabinet

BEIRUT-Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned the Lebanese electorate on Sunday that only a vote for the Shiite militant group and its allies in June parliamentary elections could ensure a renewed government of national unity. In a televised speech, Nasrallah, who led a devastating 2006 war against Israel, warned that his Western-backed opponents, who are currently partners in a unity coalition, would attempt to govern alone if they emerged victorious. "Victory for the (Hezbollah-led) minority (in the outgoing parliament) will open the way for a unity government...The same is not the case if the current majority wins the elections," he said."A unity government would allow everyone to be partners so that nobody has a stranglehold over decision-making."Nasrallah made his comments as he unveiled Hezbollah's 11 candidates for the June 7 election, three fewer than the 14 MPs in the 128 seat parliament which his party currently holds. There was no immediate explanation why Hezbollah was fielding fewer candidates than in the last elections in 2005.The Shiite militant group has repeatedly refrained from fielding as many candidates as it could and has also stepped back from demanding top government posts. However, after an 18-month standoff with the majority bloc of Prime Minister Fuad Siniora that brought the country to the brink of renewed civil war, Hezbollah and its allies secured veto powers in a government of national unity agreed in a power-sharing deal in May 2008.
