IAF strikes tunnels in southern Gaza

IAF jets attacked targets in Khan Yunis and Rafah on Tuesday afternoon, several hours after a Grad-type rocket landed in Ashkelon, Palestinian sources reported.Around 6:00 p.m. a car was hit in the Rafah area at the southern Gaza Strip. Earlier a Hamas outpost in the Bani Swaheil area east of Khan Yunis was destroyed. Several smuggling tunnels along the Philadelphi Corridor were also struck. The IDF said that Tuesday's targets included a total of five smuggling tunnels, a rocket launching site and a Hamas outpost.Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who was speaking at the Herzliya Conference, told attendees that "the IAF is operating in the Gaza Strip right now."Earlier, after the Grad-type rocket hit in Ashkelon on Tuesday morning, the IDF warned residents of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, that they should leave their homes lest they be caught in an IAF air strike. The recorded messages, in Arabic, said people who work in tunnels, live near them or are "giving logistical help to terrorists" should evacuate the area immediately, residents said.Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni convened to discuss the latest ceasefire violation, and the potential Israeli response. While there was no comment as to what was said in the meeting, spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office Mark Regev warned of grave consequences should the rocket fire continue."Hamas is playing with fire and they alone will be responsible for the destruction of the truce," Regev said. "The whole international community will understand that if there is a new escalation it will be the direct result of Hamas's extremist, irresponsible and nihilistic behavior."On Tuesday morning Palestinians fired a Grad rocket at Ashkelon, the first instance of such a rocket being fired into Israel since the end of Operation Cast Lead some two weeks ago. There were no casualties reported in the attack, but some damage to the surrounding area was reported. On Monday night Gaza terrorists fired a Kassam rocket that hit a kibbutz in the Sha'ar Hanegev region. No one was wounded and no damage was reported in that attack either.Earlier Monday, minutes after a mortar shell struck an open area in the Eshkol region, IAF warplanes responded, launching a missile at a vehicle in the southern Gaza Strip.According to witnesses in the area, one person was killed and three others wounded in the attack. The IDF said that the men were part of the cell which fired the mortar shell into Israel.
