Indian forces gun down suspected insurgents

NEW DELHI, India-Indian forces gunned down two suspected insurgents Saturday in Assam, killing one of them, a day after a bomb explosion in the remote northeastern state, the federal home ministry said.Two cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were "neutralized" in separate shootouts, it said in a statement in New Delhi.The dead suspect was an expert in bomb-making and was involved in previous bomb explosions, the ministry added.
Another insurgent could have escaped in one of the operations, it said.Security forces recovered explosives and a pistol from the suspected insurgents, according to the ministry.The ULFA is a separatist group that has waged a 20-year rebellion demanding more autonomy for the region from the central government in India.The group has been blamed for a number of deadly attacks in recent years, including the deaths of 42 migrant workers in a series of small arms attacks in January 2007 and for bombing an Indian paramilitary forces bus in 2004.
