NWO WATCH:"A GLOBAL Solution for World Financial Crisis"....

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said political leaders are discussing the idea of closing the world's financial markets while they"rewrite the rules of international finance.''"The idea of suspending the markets for the time it takes to rewrite the rules is being discussed,'' Berlusconi said today after a Cabinet meeting in Naples, Italy. A solution to the financial crisis"can't just be for one country, or even just for Europe, but global.'' The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell as much 8.1 percent in early trading and pared most of those losses after Berlusconi's remarks. The Dow was down 0.5 percent to 8540.52 at 10:10 in New York. Group of Seven finance ministers and central bankers are meeting in Washington today, and will stay in town for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings this weekend. European Union leaders may gather in Paris on Oct. 12, three days before a scheduled summit in Brussels, Berlusconi said today, while Group of Eight leaders may hold a meeting on the crisis"in coming days,'' he said. Berlusconi didn't give any details about what kind of rules leaders were looking to change, except to say that leaders are"talking about a new Bretton Woods.''The Bretton Woods Agreements were adopted to rebuild the international economic system after World War II in a hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The aim of the agreements was to establish a monetary management system, initially by pegging currencies to gold. The IMF was set up later to help manage the international financial system.

Obama Muslim Outreach Coordinator Under Fire for Meeting With Extremists

Barack Obama's newly appointed Muslim outreach adviser is coming under fire for meeting with Islamic groups with extremist views, just two months after her predecessor resigned over links to a radical cleric.Minha Husaini met with members of several Islamic organizations in Virginia on September 15-including some that terrorism experts say have ties to Hamas and the radical Muslim Brotherhood.Among the attendees were senior members of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which was listed by federal prosecutors as an unindicted co-conspirator in a terror-related trial.Several people connected to CAIR have been convicted of felonies-including on terrorism-related charges. CAIR bills itself as the nation's largest Muslim civil-rights advocacy group. As recently as last year, it advised the Transportation Security Administration on sensitivity training regarding Muslim air travelers. Nihad Awad, a CAIR co-founder and executive director, met with President Bush in the aftermath of 9/11.But critics say CAIR has a long history of masquerading as a moderate Islamic group."These groups, even if they themselves are not active terrorist organizations, do subscribe to large amounts of the ideology that fuels the terrorism that we are being confronted with," said Andrew McCarthy, former Assistant U.S. Attorney.CAIR did not return repeated calls for comment.Awad, who was at the September meeting with Husaini, recently attended a dinner with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Also present at the Sept. 15 meeting was Mahdi Bray, who has publicly announced his support for the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Bray, the executive director of the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, raised his fist in the air during a rally in Washington in October 2000 to demonstrate his support for the terror groups.Bray refused to comment on the recent gathering. "It was a closed meeting," he told FOX News.
Johari Abdul Malik, imam of the Dar Al-Hijrah Mosque in Falls Church, Va., also participated in the meeting. During a conference in Chicago in 2001, he told attendees, "You can blow up bridges, but you cannot kill people who are innocent on their way to work." In November 2004 he told followers, "You will see Islam move from being the second largest religion in America-to being the first religion in America."Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said the campaign would not have sent a representative to the meeting had it known the list of participants."This meeting was not organized by the campaign-our outreach staff attends many meetings in the course of each day and they accepted an invitation from community leaders to attend," LaBolt told FOX News in a written statement. The Obama campaign's previous Muslim outreach advisor, Mazen Asbahi-who stepped down in August following reports he was linked to a radical imam-also attended the meeting. In a brief telephone conversation, Asbahi refused to discuss why he was at the meeting or whom he was representing.According to LaBolt, "[Asbahi] is not an employee of the campaign and does not speak on behalf of the campaign."

'Indoctrinated' children ushered into Obama-ism

A group of 5- to 12-year-old children in Venice, California, is writing and singing songs promoting Barack Obama's presidential campaign and his familiar messages of "hope" and "change." Some critics say the adults behind the "Sing for Change" choir are indoctrinating the young children involved.Donning blue T-shirts bearing the phrase "Imagine Hope," the group of 22 children recently recorded songs that repeat Barack Obama's "Yes We Can" slogan and declare, in a religious tone, that the Democratic presidential nominee is going to "change the world" and "spread happiness and freedom."Bob Knight, director of the Culture and Media Institute, believes people in Hollywood are convinced Barack Obama is the "messiah" for America. "I think this video is more evidence that a lot of powerful figures in Hollywood are behind Barack Obama," Knight contends. "And this gives him an edge because these are the people that run the networks, they run the studios, and they're doing everything they can to make sure that their candidate is cast in the most positive light possible, while the networks blast his opponents." Contrary to what has been reported by Internet websites such as the Drudge Report and WorldNetDaily, the director of the "Sing for Change" video was not the same Jeff Zucker who is the CEO of NBC Universal.

Obama on Ayers: ‘I Assumed He Had Been Rehabilitated’

Proof Obama backed ruthless, foreign thug:Set up direct Senate contact for Kenyan opposition leader

Sen. Barack Obama with Raila Odinga
One e-mail purportedly from Obama, dated Dec. 22, 2006, read, "I will kindly wish that all our correspondence be handled by Mr Mark Lippert. I have already instructed him. This will be for my own security both for now and in future."
It is reproduced here with the e-mail address of the person who forwarded it to WND

The second e-mail, again from Obama's Senate address to Odinga's e-mail, stated, "Thanks for contacting me about Mr Lippert through email. Contact him through mark_lippert.obama.senate.gov."
Sen. Barack Obama designated a personal aide as his direct contact for the 2007 Kenyan presidential campaign of Raila Odinga, who later was appointed prime minister after his election loss was followed by widespread, deadly violence that destroyed or damaged 800 Christian churches, according to e-mails obtained by WND senior staff writer Jerry Corsi during a trip to Kenya.Corsi attempted to release this and other information at a Tuesday press conference in Nairobi. The WND reporter and No. 1 New York Times bestselling author was detained by Kenya security officers as soon as he entered the hotel to make his presentation. He was held incommunicado and without food for the entire day before being permitted to board his regularly scheduled flight out of the country to London, where he is currently recuperating from the ordeal. As WND has reported, Obama openly campaigned for Odinga during the Illinois Democrat's 2006 Senate "fact-finding visit" to Kenya.Odinga called for protests over alleged voter fraud after losing the December 2007 general election. The resulting protest violence left an estimated 1,000 members of the dominant Kikuyu tribe in Kenya dead and an estimated 500,000 displaced from their homes. The links between Obama and Odinga were documented by copies of two e-mails obtained by Corsi during his meetings in Kenya with various government officials and others. The e-mails, apparently sent by Obama himself, referenced the senator's aide, Mark Lippert. The e-mails were provided to WND by an insider in Kenya who fled Odinga's Orange Democratic political party and requested anonymity because of the danger of retaliation. The e-mails, identified as coming from Obama's Senate office, are addressed to "railaaodinga" at a yahoo.com address.A WND e-mail to the same Obama address generated an automated response and a list of contacts for Obama's offices. A WND e-mail sent to the Odinga e-mail address didn't generate a response. One e-mail purportedly from Obama, dated Dec. 22, 2006, read, "I will kindly wish that all our correspondence [be] handled by Mr Mark Lippert. I have already instructed him. This will be for my own security both for now and in future....."

Bribes paid for Corsi to escape from Kenya:Insider reports thousands given to 'various officials'

LONDON-Bribes totaling thousands of dollars were paid to facilitate WND senior staff reporter Jerome Corsi's departure from Kenya after immigration authorities there detained him and his publicist – holding them under armed guard and without food-to prevent Corsi from holding a news conference revealing what he had discovered about Barack Obama's controversial ties in the African nation.Confirmation of the payments comes just as a report from Kenya Broadcasting Corp. admitted it was politics, not the contrived paperwork reason, for which Corsi was detained.According to copies of e-mails obtained by WND, a resident of Kenya who provided funding for the payments said the bribes were paid to "various officials" during the day-long standoff between Corsi and Kenyan immigration authorities. The e-mail addressed to Corsi said, "Sorry that your last day in the country was a little stressful. I trust you are both (Corsi and publicist Tim Bueler) safe and have all of your possessions with you.""We had worked diligently to get you both out safe and with all your stuff," the informant said. "There was a great cost, however."The informant then cited fees used for "paying off" some of the officials involved in the case. The informant listed the immediate expenditure of $2,500 in U.S. dollars and another $1,428 worth of Kenya shillings."I have given them all the money I had access to," said the informant, who said the total, $3,928, took care "of a portion of what will be required." He suggested there still could be future costs for "damage control."The e-mail also included a plea not to identify any individual either paying or taking the bribes, because of the potential for retaliation. As WND has reported, Kenyan immigration officials and soldiers armed with automatic weapons prevented Corsi from holding a scheduled news conference about his investigation into Obama's Kenyan links. The Kenyan authorities detaining him later took him to his departure flight and made it clear he was not welcome to return."Don't ever come back. See you in hell," Corsi reported an unidentified official told him as the author of the No. 1 best-selling book "The Obama Nation" was delivered to a flight departing from Nairobi.Corsi took the British Airways flight to London, from where he told WND he was tired but safe and working on assembling the results of his investigation conducted in Kenya into a report.

"Obama Nation"Author on His Detention in Kenya

'Obama Nation' author departs Kenya after detention, foiled news conference:Sendoff to Corsi: 'See you in hell'

NAIROBI, Kenya-WND senior staff reporter Jerome Corsi yesterday was refused permission to hold a scheduled news conference about his investigation into Barack Obama's Kenyan links by Kenyan immigration officials and soldiers armed with automatic weapons who then took him to his departure flight and made it clear he was not welcome to return."Don't ever come back. See you in hell," Corsi reported an unidentified official told him as the author of the No. 1 best-selling book "The Obama Nation" was delivered to a flight departing from Nairobi for London.Corsi is now in London, where he will file a WND story on his discoveries in Kenya and recount yesterday's ordeal in radio and TV interviews, including the Fox News Channel's Hannity and Colmes.Late yesterday, Corsi was able to communicate surreptitiously with WND in Kenya after being held incommunicado by immigration officials who at one point claimed his was being held because of a paperwork mixup. He was just getting ready for a 10 a.m. (3 a.m. EDT) news conference to announce the results of his investigation into Obama's connections inside Kenya when immigration officials detained him along with Tim Bueler, his publicist.Corsi made a quick contact with WND founder and editor Joseph Farah, but then Kenyan authorities, armed with automatic weapons, confiscated his passport and cell phone and held him as if he were suspected of a crime.Corsi documented the ordeal and dispatched a report to WND from his telephone later in the brief period between the time authorities returned his belongings in preparation for his departure and when the British Airways jet took off."We were detained and lied to all day," Corsi wrote. "The immigration officer at the hotel 15 minutes before the press conference this morning said we only needed to come to the immigration headquarters downtown for a few minutes and that we would be back to the hotel for the press conference with only a few minutes delay."That, however, was not to be the case, as Corsi and Bueler would find out soon after they left their hotel."We got brought to immigration headquarters by what turned out to be about a dozen immigration officers plus military armed with automatic rifles," he reported. "Tim got placed in the back of the vehicle and was surrounded by the armed military. I was in the front between the driver and the top immigration officer who first identified himself at the hotel."Kenyan authorities took their cell phones and passports, even while explaining the Americans were "not under arrest."Hours later, two lawyers appeared before the author and his publicist, although they had not been requested."About 1:30, the chief immigration officer demanded we accompany him immediately to the airport-we were told immigration needed to verify our air tickets, which always were for this flight tonight," Corsi wrote. "The tickets were always e-tickets and could easily be validated by computer from anywhere."But Kenyan immigration officials then explained the men's entry cards had been "lost" and that Corsi and Bueler had to be at the airport to help investigate what happened. In addition to being held incommunicado, the two also were held without food."We were offered no food until Tim began feeling a problem with his blood sugar, then around 2:30 p.m. the head immigration people allowed one of the immigration officials to accompany us so we could have 'no more than 15 minutes' to buy something to eat,'" Corsi wrote.Eventually, they were taken from the holding facility to the airport."We were led out of headquarters by the back stairs and elevators, to avoid the press that had followed us to headquarters and was still waiting for interviews," Corsi reported."We went to the airport via armed caravan," Corsi added, and on arrival the two Americans were told to go into a "holding cell" already containing other possible deportees."We refused, demanding to know if we were being charged with any offenses, where our lawyers had gone, and why we had to be locked up, when all day we had been lied to and told we would be released 'soon,'" Corsi reported. The instructions to go into the holding cell were repeated several times, always without success, he said.Late in the afternoon the two were told they would be allowed to board the British Airways flights to London and "that we had committed no offenses and were not being deported," said Corsi. But authorities still kept the cell phones and passports."About 6 p.m. our lawyer arrived with our luggage, which we had not been allowed to go get or pack," Corsi wrote. "We had no place or opportunity to consult with the lawyer, who was asked to leave once we got our bags."A brief meeting with Richard Nicholson, the vice consul in the U.S. embassy followed."He, too, confirmed we had done nothing wrong and were not being deported," Corsi wrote. It was shortly after that, when authorities returned Corsi's cell phone, that he was able to provide this report as the British Airways flight prepared for departure for London.Peter Mbae, a Kenyan publicist who arranged the news conference, told WND he contacted the Ministry of Immigration and was told the Americans were being held but would be let go eventually. It was just one of the stories released during the day. One official with the Embassy of Kenya in Washington said he was unaware of Corsi's detention. When WND reached the embassy later, a receptionist confirmed the official word was that Corsi was not detained."He's enjoying his holiday in Kenya," she said. The management of the hotel where Corsi was scheduled to hold the press conference backed away from its previous commitment, too.In a press release, the hotel said: "We would like to assure our business partners and the public at large that Laico Regency Hotel is a law-abiding institution and does not condone any smear campaigns. The management cannot allow such activities to take place."Corsi was in Kenya because Obama has a history of connections there, and the African nation is where his father worked as a well-known government economist. Corsi documented this history in his book but scheduled the trip to find answers to lingering questions – particularly about the links between the presidential candidate and Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga.Corsi had promised a news conference that would "expose details of deep secret ties between U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and a section of Kenya government leaders, their connection to certain sectoral groups in Kenya and subsequent plot to be executed in Kenya should Senator Obama win the American presidency."Corsi was set to show Obama and Odinga have been in direct contact since the senator's visit to Kenya in 2006. He was to claim Obama advised Odinga on campaign strategy and helped him raise money in the U.S. for the Kenya presidential campaign.Corsi was to report Odinga's 2007 presidential campaign strategy called for exploiting anti-Kikuyu tribal sentiments, claiming victory and charging voter fraud even if the campaign knew the election had been legitimately lost. Odinga, Corsi said, also was willing to fan the flames of ethnic tribal tensions and use violence as a last resort by calling for mass action that led to the destruction of properties, injuries, loss of life and the displacement of over 500,000 Kenyans. The purpose was to compel the Electoral Commission of Kenya to declare him the winner or enable him to declare himself the winner by force.Even though Odinga has not fulfilled his campaign promises to the Muslims who voted for him, he continues to cause concern among Kenyans because he has not declared his position on Shariah law, Corsi said.Corsi said Obama remained in active phone contact with Odinga through the New Hampshire Democratic Party primary in January. The Illinois senator continued to support Odinga, he said, turning a blind eye to an agreement signed with Muslims and the post-election violence instigated as part of the campaign strategy.

OBAMA WATCH:Educators line up to defend domestic terrorist Ayers

Hundreds of educators have endorsed a letter opposing the "demonization" of Williams Ayers-the domestic terrorist who helped launch Barack Obama's poliltical career, and whose relationship with the Democratic presidential candidate continues to be major controversy-arguing that frequent reports of his involvement in domestic bombings are "designed to intimidate free thinking and stifle critical dialogue.""We write to support our colleague Professor William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who is currently under determined and sustained political attack," reads the letter, available for endorsement at http://www.supportbillayers.org/."The current characterizations of Professor Ayers-'unrepentant terrorist,' 'lunatic leftist'-are unrecognizable to those who know or work with him," the letter continues.Ayers, as WND has reported, was a key member of the radical Weathermen group-a band of revolutionaries who declared war on the U.S. government and the free enterprise system-during the 1970s and has written about his involvement in bombing the New York City police headquarters in 1970, the Capitol in 1971 and the Pentagon in 1972. "Everything was absolutely ideal on the day I bombed the Pentagon," Ayers wrote in his memoir, "Fugitive Days," released the day before the Pentagon was struck again in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "The sky was blue. The birds were singing. And the bastards were finally going to get what was coming to them."The New York Times reported that Ayers later clarified, saying he didn't actually set the bomb, but was visualizing it to dramatize his participation in organizing the attack. In a Times interview published Sept. 11, 2001, Ayers said, "I don't regret setting bombs. I feel we didn't do enough."He posed for a photograph accompanying the piece that shows him stepping on an American flag. The Times also reported that when asked if he would rule out planting another bomb someday, Ayers responded, ''I can't imagine entirely dismissing the possibility.''Nevertheless, more than 600 educators have endorsed the letter, which dismisses Ayers' terrorist past, fails to mention his more recent statements and asserts, "What is most relevant now is his continued engagement in progressive causes, and his exemplary contribution-including publishing 16 books-to the field of education." Marvin Hoffman of the University of Chicago is one of letter's endorsers. He told WND he has worked with Ayers for years and the bombings happened "in a time period difficult for any of us to reconstruct, a time of great anger during the Vietnam War when the government was unresponsive to the people."Ayers should be judged, Hoffman said, by his contributions to the community and to education in the present, not his activities in the past. The educators' letter also contends that teachers have a moral obligation to promote the free flow of ideas and that public criticism of Ayers serves as a warning that "anyone who voices perspectives and advances questions that challenge orthodoxy and political power may become a target."Reports that characterize Ayers as a leftist or a terrorist, the letter claims, represent a "crusade" to "crush" the "inevitable clash of ideas" that follows when challenges to the status quo present "the possibility of change.""All citizens, but particularly teachers and scholars, are called upon to challenge orthodoxy, dogma and mindless complacency, to be skeptical of authoritative claims, to interrogate and trouble the given and the taken-for-granted," the letter states. "Without critical dialogue and dissent we would likely be burning witches and enslaving our fellow human beings to this day."The letter concludes: "We, the undersigned, stand on the side of education as an enterprise devoted to human inquiry, enlightenment and liberation. We oppose the demonization of Professor William Ayers."Though WND could not confirm the validity of every name on the list, several of those recorded as endorsing the letter match educators, such as Hoffman, serving in universities across the country.Another name listed as endorsing the letter is Mike Klonsky, who, as WND reported, was a former student activist with Ayers in the 1960s and who runs an education organization founded by Ayers that received a substantial grant from a group directed by Sen. Barack Obama.Ayers' past activities have come under increased national scrutiny lately as his connections to Obama have been highlighted in the press. Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, referencing Ayers, said on the campaign trail this week Obama had been "palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

Obama commandos' teacher disciplined:Suspended for insubordination for slogan-chanting drill squad

A middle school teacher has been suspended for posting a video of his Barack Obama-slogan chanting, arm-waving drill team on YouTube. The report from Fox News said the teacher, whose name was being withheld by the school district, was suspended today for the video revealing his students chanting lines from Obama talking points and wearing military-style uniforms.According to Fox News, the school learned about the posting of the video, called "Obama Youth – Junior Fraternity Regiment," and immediately took action. It shows 10 black male students in 8th or 9th grades from the Urban Community Leadership Academy in Kansas City, a public charter school organized by the University of Central Missouri. They march in the room chanting, "Alpha, omega, alpha, omega."Although the immediate source of the phrase "alpha omega" likely traces to the black fraternity step team tradition, the deeper source derives from the book of Revelation, which refers to God as the "Alpha and Omega," the first and last letters of the classical alphabet. That chant soon yields to, "Yes we can."School superintendent Joyce McGautha was not pleased. She did not approve and does not condone the video. Not only was the teacher suspended, further drill activities were halted."Taxpayers have every reason to be upset," she said. The superintendent said because of the "legal action that we'll probably have to take against the teacher," his identity would be withheld at this point. The Fox News report said the students studied Obama's economic plan with the teacher, and the superintendent did not know whether the teacher or the students scripted the routine. The group should have also studied Republican John McCain's economic plan, the superintendent said. The superintendent said many of the school's activities are recorded, and the teacher had been warned in a letter not to put it on the Internet.Anonymous forum participants on the Fox News site were disdainful of the Democrats."The Democratic Party has become taken over by distorted closet socialists," said one."Why does this not surprise me in the least, coming from an Obama supporter?" said another. "He deserves to be fired and NEVER allowed to teach again!"WND reported just last week when nearby Missouri law officials, including public prosecutors, who were reportedly planning to "respond immediately" to any misleading advertisements against Obama if they "might violate Missouri ethics laws," said they were backing off the intimidating implications of that report, promising they have no intention of prosecuting anyone. As WND reported, prosecuting attorneys Bob McCulloch and Jennifer Joyce originally announced on KMOV-TV in St. Louis their participation in Obama's "Truth Squad," pledging to defend the candidate from untruthful ads with an undefined "immediate" response."Whether it is directly attributable to the (McCain) campaign or to one of the soft money operations," McCulloch told the station, "if they're not going to tell the truth, somebody's got to step up and say, 'That's not the truth. This is the truth.'"The move prompted Missouri's governor to object that the prosecutors were using "police state tactics" to squelch information hurtful to the Obama campaign."What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words," wrote Gov. Matt Blunt in a statement. "The party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment."

Pro-Obama, Muslim-led voter registration in mosques

A leading critic of Islam isn't surprised there has been virtually no coverage or action taken against a Muslim group that has been running an illegal "get out the vote" campaign in swing-state mosques. The group, Muslim Americans for Obama [MAFO], insists that all of its voter registration activity is non-partisan, despite the fact that its mission statement says it was launched in August 2008 "to provide a vehicle for Muslim-American supporters of Barack Obama to organize and mobilize our fellow citizens to get out the vote to elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States." Continuing, the group's website states: "Although there is only a short period of time until the election...,there is much work to be done for supporters of Barack Obama's candidacy. [MAFO] was formed to offer a vehicle for Muslim-Americans to mobilize quickly and effectively so that our community turns out in great numbers for Barack Obama on Election Day."The "get out the vote" events are scheduled at mosques in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio. Robert Spencer is director of Jihad Watch, a project of the David Horowitz Freedom Center. He argues MAFO may be skirting the law. "When they are running these voter registration drives at mosques, really it's essentially illegal because they are clearly trying to get people to vote for Obama-and that's in violation of their tax-exempt status," Spencer charges. "So this is a group that is crossing the line and ought to be disciplined as such." The Jihad Watch leader, however, figures that is not likely to happen. "...I kind of doubt that they will be [disciplined], given the politically correct atmosphere nowadays," he says."I wouldn't be the least surprised if no action is taken against them." Spencer contends that if a group called "Christians for John McCain" claimed to be non-partisan and ran a registration drive in churches, it would be all over the media and create a huge scandal and embarrassment for the McCain campaign.

Does Obama's Relationship with Bill Ayers Matters

OBAMA'S ALLIANCES:Ayers Has Not Left Radicalism Behind

Bill Ayers isn't out bombing anymore, but he has never stopped being a radical. His ties to hostile Marxist regimes remain, raising more questions about Barack Obama's refusal to fully repudiate him...Distancing himself, as Obama did, from the "detestable acts" of the founder of the Weather Underground terror organization, is one thing. Ayers' terror attacks-in armed robbery, police murder, attempted killings of U.S. troops, and bombings of U.S. democratic institutions to advance a Marxist revolution-were quite easy to disavow. But Ayers' supporters say his violence was all a long time ago.Obama emphasized that his friend's terror acts happened "when I was eight years old." Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley told the New York Times last week "he's done a lot of good in this city and nationally." He added: "This is 2008. People make mistakes. You judge a person by his whole life."But a look at Ayers' whole life suggests he hasn't changed much more than his tactics. He's still the same radical he always was.Ayers' terrorist acts in the 1970s didn't just blow in out of nowhere. Ayers moved to urban guerrilla violence after finding Tom Hayden's riot-prone Students for a Democratic Society too tame. He was inspired by the Cuban revolution of Fidel Castro, who toppled a democracy a decade earlier.Ayers' Weathermen were part of a broad upsurge of Marxist guerrilla movements across the hemisphere, using similar tactics to establish Cuba-style regimes. These children of the rich infiltrated universities and spread violence against the "establishment," just as Ayers did.At the time Ayers was targeting the Pentagon, Argentina's communist ERP began terror attacks in 1969, triggering a Dirty War by 1976. Brazil's MR-8 shot police and kidnapped a U.S. ambassador in 1969. In Colombia, the FARC unleashed terror in 1966, and the M-19 was born in 1970. Uruguay's Tupamaros began bombing and kidnapping in 1970. Peru's Shining Path started university agitation in 1973 and full-blown war by 1980. The Weather Underground, founded in 1969, was the same leftist revolution, U.S.-style.Operating underground, Ayers' Weathermen aligned closely with Castro's Cuba, which aided Marxist terror groups. Some Weathermen on the run found asylum in Havana; others, like Mark Rudd, were trained by the KGB there. Cuba helped Weathermen on the lam by letting them secretly pass messages through Cuba's embassy in Canada, says FBI informant Larry Grathwohl.Like many at the time, Ayers was a child of privilege from a wealthy family who got away with his crimes at a time when the West had lost its will. "Guilty as sin, free as a bird — America is a great country," Ayers taunted after walking free on a technicality.Ayers is too smart to continue bombing, but remains a "revolutionary" through other means. He remains proud of his violent past and alignment with America's enemies."I don't regret setting bombs," he famously told the New York Times. "I feel we didn't do enough." His terrorist past reviled here, he's found a welcome embrace in Hugo Chavez's Venezuela.Obama says he barely knows him, but in the years when he was meeting and serving together on the Annenberg Challenge and the Woods Fund, as well as launching his career with a fundraiser in Ayers' Che Guevara-festooned house, Ayers made at least four Marxist pilgrimages to Caracas to praise Chavez's dictatorial regime. He sits on the board of a Venezuelan government think tank called Miranda International Center, focused on bringing Cuba-style education to Venezuelan school children.Recent polls show this turning of schools toward Marxist indoctrination terrifies average Venezuelans. Venezuelan dissidents also accuse Miranda of rewriting constitutions in South America to grant leftist leaders absolute power, with some saying Ayers had a role in 2007's effort to give Chavez total power inside Venezuela. It's not surprising. Ayers' violent methods may have influenced Chavez's rise to power in 1998. Like Ayers' terrorists, Chavez's campaign began with Weather Underground-style hijackings of bank trucks. At the same time, captured computer documents show that Chavez took $150,000 from FARC while in prison.Ayers' Miranda biography calls him "leader of the revolutionary and anti-imperialist group The Weather Underground which initiated armed struggle against the government of the USA for more than 10 years from the heart of the empire."It continues: "Now, he's a professor of education and executive researcher of the University of Illinois in Chicago. He's developed courses around urban reform of schools, problems of capitalist education, and research. He is the author or editor of more than 11 books, including a memoir titled Fugitive Days on the struggle against the government of the United States."In other words, education isn't the best credential for this supposedly distinguished professor — his terrorist past is. It's a good guess that his biography on the Miranda site was written by Ayers himself. Ayers' Miranda peers are a soup of the international far left: a FARC apologist from Colombia, a Che-crazy UCLA professor named Peter McLaren, and activist Eva Golinger, who was closely tied to Philip Agee, the fugitive CIA traitor who died earlier this year in Havana.Meanwhile, Ayers' stepson Chesa Boudin has close Venezuelan ties, too. He identified himself as a foreign-policy adviser intern to Venezuela's government in 2005. He had an office next to Chavez's own in the presidential palace. Not surprising, since Boudin's grandfather is Fidel Castro's personal attorney, and his mother is jailed Weather Underground terrorist Kathy Boudin. His family ties give him street cred to communists. This, then, is Bill Ayers.Obama claims he had no idea about his terrorist past when he met him, and hasn't talked to him since 2005.But with the association going back to the 1980s and Ayers making no secret of his radical views, this is hard to believe.Given glowing profiles of Ayers and his past in the Chicago Tribune, as writer Jonah Goldberg found, and Ayers' radical agenda in education and philanthropy while Obama and Ayers served on charitable projects, it's hard to imagine anything but a deep bond. The reality is, either Obama is naive or he doesn't care that Ayers remains an anti-American radical who would hurt his country. His ties to the rising radicalism in Latin America continue. Could anything be more useful to Chavez than to have someone like Ayers as a go-between with a U.S. president? Obama still has repudiated only Ayers' past terrorist actions. What about his present?

Obama's Record on Protecting Life

Illegal Obama donors: Middle Eastern Arabs;Gazan brothers' illicit contributions listed in government campaign filings

JERUSALEM-Palestinian brothers inside the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip are listed in government election filings as having donated $29,521.54 to Sen. Barack Obama's campaign.Donations of this nature would violate election laws, including prohibitions on receiving contributions from foreigners and guidelines against accepting more than $2,300 from one individual during a single election, Bob Biersack, a spokesman for the Federal Election Commission, told WND in response to a query. The contributions also raise numerous questions about the Obama campaign's lax online donation form, which apparently allows for the possibility of foreign contributions. Last week, the Atlas Shrugs blog outlined a series of donations in 2007 made to Obama's campaign from two individuals, Monir Edwan and Hosam Edwan, totaling $29,521.54.In an online form on Obama's campaign site, the Edwans listed their street as "Tal Esaltan," which they wrote was located in "Rafah, GA."Rafah is not a city in Georgia. The Atlas blog immediately raised concerns that the money may have been donated from the Gaza Strip town of Rafah. The Edwans' donations are listed in both FEC filings and other election filing sites, such as CampaignMoney and donordata.org.Monir made 20 donations ranging from $717 to $2017.50 from October through November 2007. His donations totaled $24321.41. Hosam made seven donations ranging from $508.63 to $1725.96, totaling $5,200.13, all in October 2007.A WND investigation tracked down the Edwans, who are brothers living in the Tal Esaltan neighborhood of Rafah, a large refugee camp in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. The Edwans are a large clan that include top Hamas supporters.Speaking to WND, the two brothers praised Obama and admitted giving the money online to his campaign. They said they are not U.S. citizens or green card holders but are citizens of "Palestine."The Edwans denied they are affiliated with Hamas. Palestinian sources in Gaza confirmed the Edwans in question are secular, but could not say whether they supported Hamas.Monir and Hasam Edwan denied their financial transactions online – listed as donations in U.S. government election filings – were actual donations to Obama's campaign. Instead they claimed they purchased about $30,000 in Obama T-shirts from the presidential candidate's online store – a contention that did not hold up during a WND interview, when they changed their story several times."My brother Hosam and I knew that Obama will be a big hit even before he became a candidate. We knew the guy would be a celebrity in Gaza so we decided to invest the amount of $29,000 to buy Obama T-shirts from his website and sell them in Gaza," Monir Edwan told WND, speaking by cell phone from Gaza."I know on the back of this story Obama rivals will present our business as a donation and they will try to use this story to let Obama fall, but I'm telling you, we bought T-shirts," Edwan maintained.Edwan said any profit made from purportedly selling the Obama T-shirts was not returned to the Obama campaign."We have nothing to do with the Obama campaign. We just like Obama and believe he will be the best for the Palestinians and for the world."At first Monir Edwan claimed he sold the T-shirts in Gaza for around $9 and that a profit was made."Some young men even bought the T-shirts for 60 shekel ($17.29), which is a lot to spend in Gaza on a T-shirt, but that is how much Gazans like Obama," Edwan claimed. But it was pointed out to Edwan the T-shirts for sale on Obama's website are listed as $20.08 and that selling the merchandise for less would not yield a profit."Maybe we sold the shirts for a lot more. I can't remember now," said Edwan.Asked why he would purchase T-shirts at such a high rate and pay the cost of shipping when he could pay a company to produce T-shirts for less, Edwan replied, "We wanted the shirts to come from the campaign."But Edwan could not explain how he managed to get shipments of T-shirts into the Gaza Strip during the months he claimed to have purchased the merchandise, since Israel imposed a tight closure of the Gaza Strip starting in June 2007 that lasted until June 2008, when the Israeli government agreed to a cease-fire with Hamas in Gaza."We don't want to cause any damage to Obama's campaign," was Edwan's reply.
Edwan said he wants Obama to be president."Not just the people in Gaza but people from all over the world are rooting for this great man," he told WND.FEC spokesman Biersack told WND contributions from overseas are allowed if the donations are coming from U.S. citizens or green card carriers. But he said accepting money from foreigners would violate election provisions. He said there are strict guidelines against accepting more than $2,300 from one individual during a single election."I am not familiar with the particulars of the case, so I am commenting in general. The FEC will have to examine all the circumstances before determining any wrongdoing," Biersack clarified.Obama's campaign did not return WND phone calls or e-mail queries. That the Edwans were able to contribute any money to Obama's campaign from Gaza opens questions into the methods used by the presidential candidate's website to accept online donations. The website donation form asks each donor to affirm he or she is a U.S. citizen and is above the age of 16 but doesn't require donors to prove their citizenship status, such as providing a social security number. The form further requires the donor to affirm the contribution is not coming from a corporation, political action committee or lobby group.

Farrakhan on Obama: 'The Messiah is absolutely speaking':'Barack has captured the youth,' will bring about 'universal change'

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, another powerful Chicago-based political figure associated with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and other long-time associates of Democratic Party presidential candidate Barack Obama, is leaving no doubt about what he thinks of the leader in the campaign for the White House.
He says when Obama talks "the Messiah is absolutely speaking."
You can watch it for yourself on a newly posted YouTube video.

Addressing a large crowd behind a podium with a Nation of Islam Saviour's Day 2008 sign, Farrakhan proclaims,
"You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change, and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. That's a sign. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking."
At the media watchdog blog NewsBusters, P.J. Gladnick writes, "Imagine the excitement of the mainstream media if they had discovered that some preacher up in Alaska had declared Sarah Palin to be like a deity? Well, the same basic thing happened when the Supreme Minister of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan, declared Barack Obama to be a messiah. "I believe this messianic pronouncement by Farrakhan was made last February but the video was uploaded to YouTube just yesterday. … I don't know which is creepier, the pronouncement of Obama as messiah by Farrakhan or that strange cultish smile on his face," Gladnick says. It's not the first time the subject has come up. WND reported when another Internet site, called "Is Barack Obama the Messiah?" raised questions. The website captured the wave of euphoria that followed the Democratic senator's remarkable rise to power within the Democratic Party. The site was laced with photos and magazine covers illustrating the theme, topped by a Obama quote strategically ripped from a Jan. 7 speech at Dartmouth College just before the New Hampshire Primary in which he told students, "… a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany, and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote" for Obama.MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews also previously claimed he felt a "thrill going up my leg" listening to an Obama speech.Gladnick writes that Obama has a charisma that goes beyond "his youthful vigor, or handsomeness, or even inspiring rhetoric.""Bill Clinton, with all his effortless, winking charm, didn't have what Obama has, which is a sort of powerful luminosity, a unique high-vibration integrity," "Gladnick says. "Dismiss it all you like, but I've heard from far too many enormously smart, wise, spiritually attuned people who've been intuitively blown away by Obama's presence - not speeches, not policies, but sheer presence - to say it's just a clever marketing ploy, a slick gambit carefully orchestrated by hotshot campaign organizers who, once Obama gets into office, will suddenly turn from perky optimists to vile soul-sucking lobbyist whores, with Obama as their suddenly evil, cackling overlord."On the YouTube website, several people participating in a dialogue dismissed any spiritual hype and pinpointed their concerns."Let us pretend there is nothing wrong with obama … I think he should at least clear up that lawsuit about where he was actually born before election day," wrote one, citing persistent Internet suspicions that his reported Hawaii birthplace isn't accurate."I am not one of his sheep," said another."How much more have (sic) to come out on Obama before the O-Bots put down the kool-aid and say ENOUGH!" added a third."Not sure the Obama team will be thrilled about yet another crazy association," added another commenter on the NewsBusters forums page. Previous reports have documented Obama's links to Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga, onetime Weatherman bombing suspect Bill Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who proclaimed a black liberation theology for 20 years while Obama was a member of his church, demanding that God "d***" America.WND also reported when Rush Limbaugh criticized Democrats who were comparing Obama to Jesus and Gov. Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate. "I know Jesus Christ. I pray to Jesus Christ all the time," said Limbaugh." I study what Jesus Christ did and said all the time, and let me tell you something, Barack Obama, you are no Jesus Christ."He also attacked Obama's stances for abortion and sex education for children in kindergarten, saying, "I can't find any such references to Jesus promoting infanticide nor do I find any references to Jesus Christ suggesting sex education be taught to 4- and 5-year-olds, but I'm still looking in the New Testament and I'll let you all know if I come up with anything."Democrats, including party strategist Donna Brazile and Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., made nearly identical biblical comparisons of the characters in this presidential election, which Limbaugh traced back to a Sept. 4 posting on a Washington blog.
"Barack Obama was a community organizer like Jesus," Cohen said during a one-minute speech on the floor of the U.S. House yesterday. "Pontius Pilate was a governor."

Obama '96 membership in socialist party uncovered

The mainstream media thought that the membership of Todd Palin, who is not a candidate for any office, in the Alaska Independence Party important enough to report in such outlets as the Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, and the New York Times, among others. So now that Barack Obama's membership in the far left New Party has been unearthed, will they report his membership in that Socialist organization?Proof of Obama's membership in the New Party was discovered by the Politically Drunk On Power blog:In June sources released information that during his campaign for the State Senate in Illinois, Barack Obama was endorsed by an organization known as the Chicago "New Party". The 'New Party' was a political party established by the Democratic Socialists of America (the DSA) to push forth the socialist principles of the DSA by focusing on winnable elections at a local level and spreading the Socialist movement upwards. The admittedly Socialist Organization experienced a moderate rise in numbers between 1995 and 1999. By 1999, however, the Socialist 'New Party' was essentially defunct after losing a supreme court challenge that ruled the organizations "fusion" reform platform as unconstitutional. After allegations surfaced in early summer over the 'New Party's' endorsement of Obama, the Obama campaign along with the remnants of the New Party and Democratic Socialists of America claimed that Obama was never a member of either organization. The DSA and 'New Party' then systematically attempted to cover up any ties between Obama and the Socialist Organizations. However, it now appears that Barack Obama was indeed a certified and acknowledged member of the DSA's New Party. On Tuesday, I discovered a web page that had been scrubbed from the New Party's website. The web page which was published in October 1996, was an internet newsletter update on that years congressional races. Although the web page was deleted from the New Party's website, the non-profit Internet Archive Organization had archived the page.
From the October 1996 Update of the DSA 'New Party':"New Party members are busy knocking on doors, hammering down lawn signs, and phoning voters to support NP candidates this fall. Here are some of our key races...
Illinois: Three NP-members won Democratic primaries last Spring and face off against Republican opponents on election day: Danny Davis (U.S. House), Barack Obama (State Senate) and Patricia Martin (Cook County Judiciary)."
You can find the above quote from the scubbed New Party web page at this Internet Archive Organization link. More confirmation of Obama's membership in the New Party can be found at an article in the November 1996 Progressive Populist magazine:
New Party members and supported candidates won 16 of 23 races, including an at-large race for the Little Rock, Ark., City Council, a seat on the county board for Little Rock and the school board for Prince George's County, Md. Chicago is sending the first New Party member to Congress, as Danny Davis, who ran as a Democrat, won an overwhelming 85% victory. New Party member Barack Obama was uncontested for a State Senate seat from Chicago.
The Democratic Socialist Party of America also reported on Obama's New Party membership in its July/August 1996 edition:
The Chicago New Party is increasely becoming a viable political organization that can make a different in Chicago politics. It is crucial for a political organization to have a solid infrastructure and visible results in its political program. The New Party has continued to solidify this base.
First, in relation to its infrastructure, the NP's membership has increased since January '95 from 225 to 440. National membership has increased from 5700 in December '95 to 7000. Currently the NP's fiscal balance is $7,000 and receives an average of $450/month is sustainer donations.
Secondly, the NP's '96 Political Program has been enormously successful with 3 of 4 endorsed candidates winning electoral primaries. All four candidates attended the NP membership meeting on April 11th to express their gratitude. Danny Davis, winner in the 7th Congressional District, invited NPers to join his Campaign Steering Committee. Patricia Martin, who won the race for Judge in 7th Subcircuit Court, explained that due to the NP she was able to network and get experienced advice from progressives like Davis. Barack Obama, victor in the 13th State Senate District, encouraged NPers to join in his task forces on Voter Education and Voter Registration. The lone loser was Willie Delgado, in the 3rd Illinois House District. Although Delgado received 45% of the vote, he lost by only 800 votes. Delgado commented that it was due to the NP volunteers that he carried the 32nd Ward. Delgado emphasized that he will remain a visible community activist in Humbolt Park. He will conduct four Immigration workshops and encouraged NP activists to get involved.
Kudos to Politically Drunk On Power for digging up this information about Obama's membership in the socialist New Party. The question now is if the MSM will deem his party membership important enough to report on. They sure didn't hesitate to report on Todd Palin's membership in the Alaska Independence Party.
UPDATE: Yet more proof of Obama's close involvement in the socialist New Party from NewsBusters' Hermano who provided this link to the Chicago Democratic Socialists of American September-October 1995 New Ground 42 edition:
About 50 activists attended the Chicago New Party membership meeting in July. The purpose of the meeting was to update members on local activities and to hear appeals for NP support from four potential political candidates. The NP is being very active in organization building and politics. There are 300 members in Chicago. In order to build an organizational and financial base the NP is sponsoring house parties. Locally it has been successful both fiscally and in building a grassroots base. Nationwide it has resulted in 1000 people committed to monthly contributions. The NP's political strategy is to support progressive candidates in elections only if they have a concrete chance to "win". This has resulted in a winning ratio of 77 of 110 elections. Candidates must be approved via a NP political committee. Once approved, candidates must sign a contract with the NP. The contract mandates that they must have a visible and active relationship with the NP.
The political entourage included Alderman Michael Chandler, William Delgado, chief of staff for State Rep Miguel del Valle, and spokespersons for State Sen. Alice Palmer, Sonya Sanchez, chief of staff for State Sen. Jesse Garcia, who is running for State Rep in Garcia's District;
and Barack Obama, chief of staff for State Sen. Alice Palmer. Obama is running for Palmer's vacant seat.
So Obama signed a contract with the New Party? Verrrry interesting.

Japan may back North Korea, U.S. nuclear deal

SEOUL/TOKYO-Japan would not object to the removal of North Korea from a U.S. terrorism blacklist if the move was seen as paving the way for Pyongyang to scrap its nuclear program, Tokyo said on Friday. The comments came as South Korean media reported North Korea and the United States were near a deal on verifying Pyongyang's account of its nuclear program, which would prompt Washington to remove it from a list of countries that sponsor terrorism. The Washington Post reported on Thursday that the Bush administration looks set to provisionally remove the North from the State Department's terrorism blacklist, as early as Friday.Japan's foreign minister said he did not know if the United States would go ahead with the move but that he would not see it as a problem if it was deemed as yielding results."We expect the United States to tell us before making a final decision and if we think that it is enough, or enough to some extent, to resolve the nuclear issue, then I think it would be fine," Hirofumi Nakasone told a news conference. Japan has taken a tough stance against North Korea, working to resolve a feud over Japanese citizens abducted decades ago to the North, but Nakasone said denuclearization was also key. Tokyo said it would extend its sanctions on North Korea, including a ban on imports, for another six months after they expire on Monday, because of a lack of progress on both the issues of denuclearization and abductees.U.S. nuclear envoy Christopher Hill, who went to Pyongyang last week to save a crumbling disarmament deal, reached a fresh verification proposal there that the U.S. administration has finished reviewing, a South Korean news report quoted government sources as saying.

U.S. May Remove North Korea from Terrorism List

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice could announce as early as Friday that the United States will remove North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, FOX News learned Thursday. Sources at the State Department told FOX News that there is a potential deal under which the U.S. would de-list North Korea. The deal, which would require North Korea to agree to verification protocols, was discussed during a meeting Thursday morning between Rice and other government agencies.Sources tell FOX News that it was a direct result of North Korea’s decision to allow U.S. negotiator Christopher Hill recently to inspect its nuclear facilities, including the Yongbyon plant.Removing North Korea from the terror list would be a major step in mending relations between the reclusive communist nation and the United States, though it also would come amid concerns about North Korea's weapons program. The International Atomic Energy Agency has said in recent days North Korea appeared to have been powering up its nuclear program and testing missiles. American satellite images confirmed reports of short-range missile testing recently, but the U.S. said those moves would not mean the death of international efforts to persuade North Korea to recommit to an agreement that offers it diplomatic and economic concessions in exchange for nuclear disarmament. Some officials in Washington have criticized the idea of de-listing North Korea, even labeling the agreement a "get out of jail free card," as key issues, including reported assistance by North Korea to Syria in establishing a nuclear weapons program, are left unaddressed.Assistant Secretary of Verification and Compliance and Implementation Paula de Sutter told FOX News that she was disappointed that the Verification bureau has not been included in any meetings on what Ambassador Hill brought from Pyongyang and not included in any meetings at the NSC.

RCC WATCH:Pope hopes Nazi-era predecessor moves toward sainthood

VATICAN CITY-Pope Benedict said on Thursday he hoped his Nazi-era predecessor Pius XII, who some Jews have accused of turning a blind eye to the Holocaust, can proceed on the road to Roman Catholic sainthood. In a homily at a Mass commemorating the 50th anniversary of Pius' death in 1958, Benedict defended Pius, saying he worked "secretly and silently" during World War Two to "avoid the worst and save the greatest number of Jews possible."Some Jews say Pius did not do enough to save Jews. The Vatican and his Jewish defenders say he worked behind the scenes to help because more direct intervention would have worsened the situation.Benedict said he prayed the process leading to Pius' beatification, the last step before sainthood, "can proceed happily."On Monday, the chief rabbi of Haifa, Israel, Shear-Yashuv Cohen, told Pope Benedict during a synod that Jews "cannot forgive and forget" that some major religious leaders during World War Two did not speak out against the Holocaust.Cohen separately told reporters Pius "should not be seen as a model and he should not be beatified."The papacy of Pius, who reigned from 1939 to 1958, is one of the most difficult issues in Catholic-Jewish relations. Many books have been written about it, with most defenders saying the situation would have been worse for Jews if he had spoken out forcefully, prompting retaliations by Hitler.

PAGAN WATCH:Thousands seek blessings of Nepal's former king

KATHMANDU-About 5,000 people lined up in front of the private home of Nepal's ousted King Gyanendra on Thursday to seek his blessings on an important Hindu festival, his first as a commoner. The king's loyalists, many of them ministers and senior officials during his absolute rule which ended in 2006, stood in queues for more than an hour to greet Gyanendra on the 10th day of the Dasain festival, when people seek the blessings of elders. Gyanendra and his wife Komal applied red vermilion paste to the foreheads of people, some on wheelchairs and others with crutches, outside their heavily guarded home in the capital Kathmandu."I feel very happy to receive their blessings," said 75-year-old Ripu Sudan Thapa after he greeted the former royal couple, who sat on chairs in front of their home.Nepal abandoned its 239-year-old monarchy in May and became a republic following a deal with former Maoist rebels to end their decade-long civil war.Gyanendra left his official palace in June and has since been living in a former hunting lodge outside the Nepali capital. The Maoist former rebels are now heading a coalition government meant to oversee the preparation of a new constitution and cap a peace process which began in 2006.

FOOD CRISIS WATCH:Cuba bolsters food rations to counter shortages

HAVANA-Fruits and vegetables are getting hard to find across Cuba after hurricanes wiped out crops, but the government is tapping food reserves to bolster the monthly food ration that Cubans have received for decades. It said it would step up imports when needed to make sure no one goes hungry, a situation that could arise by December when diplomats estimate Cuba's reserves will run out.A survey of major cities and the hardest-hit provinces found that supplies of vegetables and fruits had dried up, even in the usually well-supplied black market. But starches and proteins could still be found with an effort."The problem is you have to be at the markets when something comes in, because supply is irregular," said Carlos Pena, a state worker in Holguin province. Hurricanes Gustav and Ike struck the communist-run island in a 10-day period starting August 30, causing $5 billion in damage and wiping out of 30 percent of Cuba's crops.Cubans say the monthly ration usually provides enough basic food to get through about two weeks, and then they have to supplement it with purchases.Across much of the country the ration has been increased with additional rice, beans, sugar, cooking oil, a few cans of fish and meat, crackers and other basics, according to people interviewed. They said they had been told the additional food would be provided through March, which is when the government has said it expects the shortages to ease.

Rice laments Egypt's human rights record

WASHINGTON-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice took aim at close ally Egypt on Wednesday over its human rights record and lamented "setbacks" there despite what she said were her personal efforts to press for reforms.Rice has been lambasted by some activists for not pushing Cairo hard enough on human rights for fear of upsetting a close U.S. ally, criticism the top diplomat said was "very painful.""It has been very hard in Egypt," said Rice when asked to reflect about the Bush administration's "freedom agenda" that involves promoting human rights and democracy worldwide."The progress has not been everything in Egypt that we would have hoped for. We have had setbacks there, we have had disappointments there," Rice told an advisory committee to the State Department on promoting democracy."It is very hard when I have to sit in front of young democracy advocates and have them say 'Why have you not been advocating more on our behalf'. We have been," she added,"We are not going to fail to have relations with the Egyptian government but we do advocate on their behalf."Rice said she frequently pushed "friendly" governments like Egypt to do more on human rights but such requests were resented. "But we do it. Even with our friends that are not free."The Bush administration's so-called democracy and freedom agenda has come under attack in many parts of the Middle East, where it is seen as patronizing and an attempt by the United States to impose its own values on others. http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE497ABZ20081008
