Myanmar arrests 19 N. Korean defectors

YANGON-Myanmar authorities arrested 19 North Korean defectors near the Thai border earlier this month, an official source confirmed Saturday.The defectors, including children and elderly women, who had entered Myanmar through China, were arrested in the Myanmar border town of Tachilek opposite Mae Sai in Thailand while transiting through Myanmar on their way to South Korea, where they had planned to seek asylum, the source said.The defectors were sent to a prison in Keng Tung, a small town in Myanmar's southern Shan state, where it is believed they will be tried for immigration violations, the source said.North Korean defectors usually travel through China to countries such as Myanmar and Laos and then to Thailand or other nations which might be sympathetic to their plight.The arrested North Koreans face two to three years in a Myanmar prison if convicted.Myanmar and North Korea resumed diplomatic ties in April 2007.
