Churches could experience year-end giving drought

The founder of a Christian research firm is predicting a decline in end-of-year giving to churches and non-profit organizations. That projection is based on a recent survey conducted by The Barna Group, which found that churches are already feeling the effects of the economic meltdown.George Barna believes many churches and non-profits operate on the same strategy."This is normally the big giving time of the year-and so during the first three quarters of the year, many churches and even many non-profit organizations engage in some deficit spending, knowing that the final quarter of the year is when they make it up because...people tend to give more generously during that time of the year," he contends. "This is going to be a tight period of time." Barna says churches probably will not be able to make up budget shortfalls and should plan their events and outreaches accordingly. The survey was conducted with a random sample of 1,200 adults.
