The U.S. State Department is hardly known for alarmist forecasts about future military threats.Diplomats tend to believe all conflicts can be averted simply by talking adversaries to death.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is no exception. However, when it comes to the growing military threat posed by China, even the U.S. State Department is beginning to see the handwriting on the wall. Now, a new report by the Secretary of State's International Security Advisory Board warns the U.S. needs new weapon systems, including missile defenses and other advanced military capabilities, to deter and counter China's steady buildup of nuclear and conventional arms."Chinese strategy goes beyond building forces capable of retaking the island of Taiwan," says the report. "China seeks to 'break out' by projecting power beyond its region, including sea lanes that carry energy resources for its modernization."It is with this ominous background report that Americans should consider what the leading candidate for the presidency in Tuesday's election is saying about his military priorities.I'm not going to tell you what Obama is saying about missile defense. I'm not going to interpret an Obama position paper on his plans for massive cuts in space-based defense systems. I'm not going to suggest what I think Obama has planned for military priorities should he become president.Instead, I'm going to ask you to do something very strange, coming, as this request does, from someone who believes Barack Obama is the most dangerous, anti-American, Constitution-hating, socialist radical scoundrel who has ever run for the White House. What am I asking?I'm asking you to watch one of Barack Obama's own TV commercials. Now, granted this particular commercial is not one Obama is running now in his bid to beat Sen. John McCain. This was a commercial from an earlier campaign – his bid to secure the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidency. That was a very different Obama candidacy. Then Obama was running against Hillary Rodham Clinton, attempting to position himself as the pure Democrat, the unadulterated, uncompromising purist, the preferred candidate of Code Pink and ACORN. Lately, we've seen a different Obama entirely. No longer does he talk about precipitous withdrawals from Iraq. No longer does he talk about scrapping entire defense systems. No longer does he recklessly propose unilateral weapons cuts. But I thought it would be a good reminder to see what Obama was saying just a few months ago – when his immediate challenge was defeating Hillary, not McCain. After you view his candid statements, ask yourself what you think Obama is really going to do when he becomes president. Is he going to be the president he promised in the primaries? Or is he going to be the president he promised in the general election?Personally, I don't like either one.But I'm pretty sure I know where his heart is.He favors a weakened America. He would like to see America become more like the rest of the world – where freedom is rare and happiness rarer. He would like to see America knocked down a notch or two in the eyes of the rest of the world, which envies what we have and who we were, if not who we have become. He would like to see the world's playing field leveled – even if that means the ascendancy of a great totalitarian power and sworn enemy of liberty. He would like to see Americans forced to hand over more of their hard-earned dollars to corrupt governments around the world. That's what Obama wants. And, as president, he has made it clear he will do whatever is necessary to see his agenda fulfilled – including the disarming of America and Americans.
If you don't believe me, watch his own commercial.
