A Springsteen song on every iPod!“If you got a little money in your pocket, that means . . . you can get on iTunes and get the latest Bruce Springsteen tune.”
Obama’s really defining poverty down here, isn’t he?He’s spent a lot of time talking about poverty in America during this campaign, and talking about how poorer Americans are struggling to get by.Is this what he means?Obama also likes invoking the atmosphere of the Great Depression. He and his acolytes have proposed massive government projects to create new jobs just as FDR did (it didn’t work then either), and the comparisons of our modern economy to FDR’s economy have been fulsome from both Obama and Democrats this election cycle. But the truth is that in FDR’s day the poor struggled to find food, buy clothes and keep a roof over their heads.Today “poverty” is defined as not being able to afford a cell phone, or not having internet access. And sometimes not even that. The next time you’re around some government or low-income housing, look around to see how many trailers or apartments you can see that don’t have satellite television. Defining poverty down is an effective tactic for those who want to expand the size and power of government, because by convincing people that they’re impoverished and need the government to help them opens the door to making them dependent on the government. And that means control.
