SWARMS of locusts are sweeping across drought-affected areas in south-western NSW.A "low density" swarm seen in the Condobolin district measured about 6km long, and 170m wide, the state government said on Tuesday. Low to medium density swarms have also been spotted in the Wagga, Gundagai and Narrandera districts. Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said about nine planes were on standby to treat the swarms if they grew larger or thicker.
"We are monitoring the situation," he said in a statement. Mr Macdonald said there was no need to panic.
"It's important to realise that most of the state's crops are in the final stages of maturity and close to harvest, so are brown in colour," he said.
"Fortunately this means they are not as attractive to locusts, which prefer green plants, for example irrigated lucerne crops." Farmers are reminded they should report locust swarms to their local Rural Lands Protection Board.
