Obama Misleads Voters on His Abortion Record:'He has a long record of opposing any legislation that protects innocent life.'

In the third and final presidential debate Wednesday, Sen. Barack Obama seemed to have a tough time telling the truth. The National Right to Life Committee has worked to separate fact from fiction when it comes to the senator's record on abortion.
Falsehood: When asked about his repeated opposition to the Illinois Born Alive Infant Protection Act-which would protect babies who survive an abortion-Obama claimed: "The fact is that there was already a law on the books in Illinois that required providing lifesaving treatment."
Fact: The law "on the books"-720 ILCS 510.6-applied only where an abortionist declared before the abortion that there was "a reasonable likelihood of sustained survival of the fetus outside the womb." But babies are often born alive a month or more before they reach that point.
Falsehood:
In the debate, Obama said the Illinois Born Alive Act "would have helped to undermine Roe v. Wade."
Fact: Obama opposed the original 2001 bill as well as the 2003 bill, which stated explicitly that it had no bearing on the legal status of any human "prior to being born alive."
Falsehood:
Obama claimed to be "completely supportive of a ban on late-term abortions, partial-birth or otherwise, as long as there's an exception for the mother's health and life."
Fact: Obama used the phrase "late term" to refer to the third trimester of pregnancy, yet the great majority of partial-birth abortions are performed in the fifth and sixth months-these babies can be born alive but are not considered "late term."The Supreme Court has given abortionists wide latitude in the definition of "health," including "all factors-physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman's age-relevant to the well-being of the patient." Falsehood: Obama said, "There surely is some common ground when both those who believe in choice and those who are opposed to abortion can come together"-for example, by "helping single mothers if they want to choose to keep the baby."
Fact:
Obama advocates cutting off all federal aid to pregnancy resource centers, which provide assistance to women who are experiencing crisis pregnancies-and save the lives of many children.
Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, called Obama's answers "highly misleading."
Tony Perkins, president of FRC Action, agreed.
"Senator Obama took the opportunity to continue to blur his radical abortion views," he said. "He has a long record of opposing any legislation that protects innocent life."
FRC Action launched a national TV and radio campaign this week to highlight Obama's extreme views.
