Safia Jilani, 19, is accused of making up a story of a hate crime assault on the Elmhurst College campus
ELMHURST, Ill.-Eight days ago, word of a hate crime rocked Elmhurst College. Now, police say it was all a hoax. You might remember seeing the hundreds rallying for a student who claimed she was the victim of a beating-all because she's Muslim. But last week's victim-19-year-old student Safia Z. Jilani of Oak Brook-has become the suspect. Police say she made the whole thing up. She is charged with one count of filing a false police report-a Class 4 Felony punishable by up to one to three years in prison. Student Melissa Taylor said she'd met Jilani before and was touched by her story."You know, she seems like such a nice girl," Taylor said."How could anybody do this? I felt scared for her, but now, I'm just shocked – I can't believe it."Some non-white students we talked to fear Jilani's actions may affect attitudes toward them."I think she might have made it a little worse for us," student John Melchor said. A mural appeared today promoting unity on campus - unconnected to Jilani's case but appropriate at a time when students are searching for a sense of community. Officials could not say what Jilani's status as a student is now. Jilani also claimed threats were written on her locker. Police have not said whether that's included in their case or not. Bond was set at $10,000 for Jilani, who posted $1,000 and was released, according to DuPage County State's Attorney's office spokesman Paul Darrah. Her next court hearing is Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m.
