Floods kill 31, strand hundreds of thousands in eastern India

NEW DELHI-At least 31 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were stranded Tuesday in severe floods in India's eastern Orissa State. "The current floods are the worst natural disaster in the state in the past 50 years," local media quoted the state government as saying.More than 380,000 people in 18 districts were affected and about 52,000 houses damaged in the floods.An estimated 284,000 people have been evacuated by nearly 1,400 boats deployed in relief and rescue operations, according to state officials.But despite the rescue efforts, thousands of people still remained stranded on rooftops and highways.Last week, the embankments of the Mahanadi River and its tributaries in Orissa burst and submerged nearly 1,900 villages. According to local media, the death toll is likely to go up as reports come in from the interiors of the worst-affected districts.A low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal in the east is also bringing more rain and increasing the pressure from the overflowing rivers.
