US evacuates 170 citizens from Georgia

The United States has evacuated about 170 citizens as well as family members and relatives of diplomats from conflict ridden Georgia into neighbouring Armenia, the State Department said Monday.The embassy in the Georgian capital Tbilisi remained open and had authorized the departure of family members and dependents of diplomats, department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters."They have departed Tbilisi."We already have two convoys that have departed and I think there is a third that may be underway," he said."Apparently, 170 private American citizens have been evacuated via those official convoys," he said.US consular officials were at the border along Armenia to accept the convoys, he said.The Americans were among hundreds of foreign nationals caught up in the conflict between Russia and Georgia.Georgian forces on Monday retreated from an advancing Russian army to defend Tbilisi, the Georgian government said in a statement.
