More flash floods expected in Vietnam, 80 dead

HANOI-About 80 people have been killed and dozens remain missing in north Vietnam as heavy rains brought by tropical storm Kammuri triggered landslides and floods.The country's weather officials warned of more flash floods and landslides on Sunday in what has been described as the biggest natural disaster to hit Vietnam this year."We are still counting the dead and searching for the missing but we expect the toll to be bad, especially at those villages that have been isolated after roads were washed away and communication lost," a spokesman for the Storm and Flood Prevention Centre in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai told Reuters by telephone on Sunday.Lao Cai, bordering China was the most seriously hit area with 32 people killed by landslides and flash floods on Friday night and Saturday, provincial officials said.The Storm and Flood Prevention Centre said in its updated report on Sunday that 25 people were confirmed dead in the province of Yen Bai and eight in Quang Ninh. About 40 people remain missing."Rescue work is facing many obstacles as all national and provincial roads to the affected districts are either under water or completely washed away," the report said.A Reuters witness said about 300 passengers, including at least 25 French tourists, were stranded in a train station in Yen Bai province after their train to the resort town of Sapa was hit by flash floods since Saturday. Vietnam's National Meteorology Centre forecast more serious flash floods and landslides would occur in several northern mountainous provinces including Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Phu Tho."(The) rain and flash flood situation remains very complicated," the centre said.
