Why Is The Knoxville Church Shooting Only A Hate Crime If The Shooter Targeted Gays?

I turned on Fox News this evening and caught Geraldo Rivera interviewing a reporter on the scene at the Knoxville church shooting. The issue they kept batting back and forth was whether or not this was a “hate crime” since the church that was attacked has an open policy toward gays.My question is: Why would the shooter have to target gays in order for his crime to be a hate crime? He took a gun into a church and opened fire on innocent citizens. That, in and of itself, is a hate crime regardless if he was motivated out of hatred for homosexuals, hatred for Unitarians, hatred for Christians or even if he’s just crazy and was on some sort of imaginary duck hunt.I’m tired of crimes treated as especially heinous if they target some demographic that’s been singled out for special political treatment. It irks me that a criminal murdering a homosexual couple would be considered guilty of a greater crime than one who murdered my wife and I who are straight.A crime is a crime, and it’s dangerous to begin treating certain citizens as though they are more important and more worthy of protection than other citizens.
Update: Early reports are saying the shooter’s problem was with Christianity, not gays.So it’s not a hate crime now, right?Because hating Christians isn’t as bad as hating gays, right?
