US slams 'sham' election in Zimbabwe

The United States denounced Friday a "sham" election in Zimbabwe and called on African Union nations to increase pressure on President Robert Mugabe."I think it is pretty clear to everybody that this is a sham process run by a government that will have no legitimacy, no matter what it says, coming out of it," State Department spokesman Tom Casey said.Casey denounced "a true climate of fear and intimidation" surrounding the second round presidential vote, held amid loud international criticism following the withdrawal of opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai,56, due to violence against his opposition members.The State Department spokesman called on heads of state from the African Union, who are to meet next week in Sharm el-Sheikh,Egypt,to act."Certainly we would hope that they would continue to speak out in opposition to this completely fraudulent electoral process that is now underway and put their weight behind international efforts to reach some kind of political solution," Casey declared."At this point I am not prepared to tell them what specific measures they ought to take, but clearly, we are looking for them to speak out and to do what they think they can to be able to put pressure on the regime to change its approach."
