NUCLEAR WATCH:Alert issued over Slovenia nuclear plant incident

BRUSSELS, Belgium-European Union headquarters issued an alert Wednesday to all its member nations after an incident at a nuclear power plant in Slovenia.The EU's executive body said it was informed by Slovene authorities about a problem with the Krsko nuclear plant's primary cooling system.The plant was implementing a safe shutdown procedure and no discharge into the environment had been immediately detected, the executive body said."A loss of coolant has occurred in the primary cooling system," said the statement from the European Commission. "At the moment of issuing this press release, the power of the reactor was at 22 percent and the safe shutdown is still in progress."It said the alert from Slovenia came at 5:38 p.m. The information was immediately passed on to all 27 EU nations and an emergency team at the EU's energy directorate was placed on alert.
