JIHAD WATCH:Indonesian police hold Muslim radicals

Indonesian police have detained seven of at least 20 Muslim extremists wanted for a violent weekend attack on a rally for religious tolerance, a police spokesman said Thursday. The chief of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), Rizieq Shihab, is among those held in custody but the man who allegedly led the assault by scores of stick-wielding fanatics on Sunday is still at large, the spokesman said."The seven are part of the 20 names wanted by the police. Now 13 remain at large, including Munarman," spokesman Untung Yoga Ana said, referring to an FPI activist who commanded the "force" that attacked the pro-tolerance rally.Police detained 59 people for questioning in a raid on the FPI headquarters in central Jakarta early Wednesday in a major crackdown on the fringe Islamist group. The suspects are facing up to five years in jail for assault. The government has come under fire for failing to round up the militants earlier, amid public outrage at the attack, in which at least 19 people were injured when hundreds of extremists charged the rally with bamboo sticks. The Front, which wants sharia or Islamic law in Indonesia, has been involved in several violent vigilante attacks since 2000.
