Iran : Women Only Park Sparks Battle Of The Sexes.

A battle of the sexes row has erupted in Iran over a sports park that can only be used by women.‘Mother's Heaven’ was built in the capital, Tehran, to help women participate in a huge range of sport.But not everyone is happy with the separate facilities – including some women themselves.One said: "This park is designated for women who play sports. But I think that the place needs to be open not only for women, but for anybody who wants to play sports. There are modern sporting facilities there, from a pool to a football pitch."But others see a special kind of freedom in the new environment. "I think that in terms of security, serenity, and having opportunities, this place is really good for us women. We come to play sports or to walk and I feel the heightened activity, I can move freely," said another user of the park.Women's sport in Iran has often been a touchy subject. It is considered natural for it to take place in quiet locations out of public view. But Iranian women now take part in a range of sports - recreationally, nationally, and internationally - despite a number of strict regulations.Even so, men and women are separated in nearly all aspects of public life in Iran.The division between the sexes is a part of Islamic code imposed after the Iranian Revolution. It is aimed at preventing the physical and spiritual exploitation of women.Critics though say it is a form of oppression that keeps the country’s women from living independent lives and pursuing their own interests.
