Hamas Slams Qassam Attacks As 'Unpatriotic'

Hamas is incensed over the Qassam rocket fired by Fatah's military wing on Thursday, further threatening to topple an already volatile ceasefire with Israel. The al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for launching the rocket towards northern Israel in the early afternoon. The Qassam landed in Sderot's industrial zone, causing no injuries or damage.Hamas has accused Fatah of trying to sabotage the truce, which has so far held firm despite rocket attacks by other armed groups earlier in the week.A spokesman for the Hamas government, Taher al-Nunu, went a step further and called Fatah's actions "unpatriotic." He said Hamas was considering the possibility of taking action against those perpetrating the attacks against Israel.Hamas and the Palestinian organizations agreed on Wednesday to hold consultations before deciding to take action against anything perceived as an Israeli violation of the ceasefire. However, Thursday's attack by Fatah was intended mostly to embarrass the rival Hamas and prove it was incapable of maintaining the peace. But few were surprised in Hamas to see Fatah try to disrupt the ceasefire. According to the group, the Palestinian Authority is extremely displeased by the relative success of the truce so far. Hamas said that the inclusion of political and economic factors into the agreement with Israel has proven Hamas can be a genuine alternative to Fatah as a governing party.Zacharia Zubeidi, one of al-Aqsa's most prominent commanders in the West Bank, said that Thursday's rocket attack was carried out to correspond with Fatah's stance that Hamas does not speak for all Palestinians. On the eve of the ceasefire Hamas went so far as to round up and detain Fatah operatives it believed could jeopardize the truce."This is a nightmare as far as Fatah is concerned," a senior Hamas official told Ynet. "Where they once failed with the Gaza ceasefire, Hamas has succeeded. They're afraid that following the success in Gazasoon there will be talk of a truce in the West Bank, which is currently Fatah's last stronghold."Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad (Fatah) called on Israel to reopen border crossing with the Gaza Strip which were shut after the rocket attacks."We have 1.5 million of our people with a sense of not having much to lose. That situation must end," Fayyad told a news conference in Prague with Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek.
