China's tortured victims on display in U.S.?;Company offers full refund to visitors of plasticized human body exhibit

Under pressure from officials, a company is offering its customers their money back after exhibiting plasticized humans that could be the bodies of China's persecuted victims.According to an ABC News report, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said the company might be displaying "the remains of individuals that may have been tortured and executed in China."Premier Exhibitions has made millions with its enormously popular U.S. presentations of real human bodies. In a "20/20" interview, former CEO Arthur Geller claimed the company uses cadavers brought in from Dalian Medical University in China and not the bodies of executed people. However, the university president said it had not provided the bodies, and Geller resigned.Cuomo said that "despite repeated denials" the company "had no way of knowing the true source of their human exhibits and no meaningful documentation to support their claims that the bodies had been donated for such a use."A Chinese worker said remains of executed prisoners were processed for "plastination" at his company and delivered to Premier Exhibitions for display. The New York Attorney general's office has reportedly made a settlement with the company to "bring an end to Premier's practice of using bodies of undocumented origins in their exhibitions" and require that it provide records "demonstrating the cause of death and origins of the cadavers" in addition to the donors' written consent. "Respect for the dead and respect for the public requires that Premier do more than simply assure us that there is no reason for concern," Cuomo said.Premier Exhibitions' lawyer, Brian Wainger, said, "We are happy to have this behind us."The settlement terms only address New York displays of human bodies, but Wainger says exhibits in more than a dozen cities in the U.S., South American and Europe will "adopt practices that mirror New York's requirements."The company is offering to reimburse "all prior visitors" to the exhibition in New York City and has set aside $50,000 to resolve the matter with concerned individuals. Wainger said, "We look forward to exhibiting our bodies show in New York for many years to come."
