South Carolina House OKs Religious License Tag

COLUMBIA, S.C.-Drivers in South Carolina may soon be able to sport a Christian license plate on their vehicles.The state House has given preliminary approval to a bill allowing drivers to buy a religious license plate with a cross on a stained glass window and the words "I Believe."The House approved the measure unanimously Wednesday. It requires another routine vote before returning to the state Senate, which approved it last month.The American Jewish Congress is asking Governor Mark Sanford to say he would veto the measure. A lawyer for the group says the bill is unconstitutional because government can't support one religion.The Florida Legislature considered allowing the same religious license plate but ultimately dropped it from a license tag bill.
