Israel celebrates its 60th anniversary

Masses of Israelis were expected to take to the country's parks Thursday to mark Independence Day with a traditional barbeque. In addition to the carnal festivities, a series of event will take place across the country in celebration of the State's 60th birthday.At 9:30 am, President Shimon Peres held a reception at this Jerusalem residence for past and present Israel Defense Forces commanders. The event was attended by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and the General Staff chiefs, as well as former presidents and prime ministers.Later Thursday, 120 outstanding soldiers will receive merit certificates from the president, and representatives of the diplomatic corps serving in Israel will arrive to congratulate Peres in honor of Independence Day.The traditional Bible Quiz for Jewish youth will be held at the Jerusalem Theater at 11 am. Sixteen youths will take part in the quiz, four of them from Israel and the rest from across the world.Those who wish to mark the holiday in a military atmosphere will simply have to look up to the sky. From 12:30 to 2 pm, the Israel Air Force will hold a special air show over the following cities: Beersheba, Yeruham, Dimona, Arad, Beit Shemesh, Jerusalem, Beit Shean, Afula, Nazareth, Tiberias, Katzrin, Safed, Carmiel, Nahariya, Haifa, Netanya, Tel Aviv, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Sderot, Netivot and Ofakim.IAF aircraft and helicopters will hold aerobatic and aerial rescue shows will be held between 1 and 2 pm in front of Tel Aviv's Jerusalem Beach.Instructors of the parachuting school and the Israeli parachuting association will present the number 60 in a free fall and will land in front of the audience.Paratroopers from Israel and the world will skydive in the different cities. Some 100 paratroopers from foreign armies, who have arrived in Israel ahead of the 60th anniversary celebrations, will land on Ashkelon's coasts between 10 am and 1 pm.A naval review by the Israel Sea Corps which will begin in Haifa at 9 am, pass through Tel Aviv at 1 pm, and end in Ashkelon at around 2 pm.The 2008 Israel Prizes will be handed out in the Jerusalem Theater at 7:30 pm. The laureates include Israeli theater persona Nissan Nativ who passed away about two weeks ago, author Ida Fink and the Jewish Agency.
