Reaction to Obama -- babies are God's gift, not a 'punishment'

Pro-life advocate Wendy Wright says presidential candidate Barak Obama's recent comment that he wouldn't want his daughters to be "punished with a baby" reveals much about where the Democrat stands on the issue of the sanctity of all human life-and shows his true persona.Senator Obama (D-Illinois) was giving his opinion on abstinence-only education at a recent town hall meeting in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, when he said: "Look, I got two daughters-nine years old and six years old. I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16." Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America, says Obama professes to be a Christian, yet equates contracting a sexually transmitted disease with giving life to a child-intended or not. She says precious, innocent children are not punishment, even if the parents did not make the right choices to begin with."The senator's view is a step backward from the Judeo-Christian view that we are all created equal, and that one class of human beings-those born to teenagers-should not be treated as if they are a curse or a punishment," says Wright. "And so Senator Obama, to be true to his professed beliefs in Christianity, ought to recant his statement and not just cleverly side-step it." Wright says Obama's "punishment" attitude reveals the rationale of many Democrats. "This kind of ideology provides an excuse for aborting babies," says the CWA president. Dr. Janice Crouse is director of CWA's Beverly LaHaye Institute. She says Obama's attitude reflects a "callousness" toward pregnancy, motherhood, and babies."Scripture unequivocally informs us that children are a gift from God,"she states in a press release."And while there are serious consequences to having sexual intercourse outside of marriage, a baby is not a punishment meted out for sin."Many a woman has come to understand that despite the circumstances of a baby's conception and birth, her little one is a precious miracle that she loves and cherishes unconditionally,"Crouse adds."We are diminished as a nation when we view babies as anything less than God's gift."Columnist Ken Marotte writes that Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright, apparently did not criticize abortionists amidst his tirades against Jews, Italians, and whites-even though abortion claims a larger share of the black population than any other ethnic or racial group in America.
