Copeland asks for IRS audit
DALLAS - One of six televangelists targeted by the Senate Finance Committee for alleged lavish spending and lax oversight has asked the Internal Revenue Service to audit his ministry's finances.Attorneys for Kenneth Copeland Ministries have sent a letter to the IRS Office of Examinations saying the ministry is willing to cooperate with a tax inquiry by the agency. Copeland's ministry contends that dozens of questions about expenses, compensation, and amenities asked by the committee's ranking Republican, Iowa Senator Charles Grassley, are similar to those posed in an IRS church tax inquiry. Attorneys for the ministry say the appropriate procedure is for Grassley to obtain the information from the IRS after it conducts an audit of the church. Most of the other targeted ministries have cooperated with the Senate probe rather than risk being subpoenaed to testify before the committee.
