Supreme Court Allows Arizona Inmates Easy Access to Abortions

Taxpayers will have to pay for prisoners' trips to abortion clinics.
The U.S. Supreme Court will allow inmates in Arizona to be taken to abortion clinics without a court order, and taxpayers will pay for the transportation. The sheriff in Maricopa County, Ariz., had objected to the tax-funded trips. He was opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union, which argued that inmates' so-called constitutional right to an abortion overrides the sheriff's objections. The Supreme Court will not hear the case.“The American people should not be forced, through their tax dollars, to subsidize abortions, directly, or indirectly,” said Greg Scott, a spokesman for the Alliance Defense Fund.Peter Gentala, general counsel for The Center for Arizona Policy, said this is another example of states losing their rights to place reasonable restrictions on abortion.“What we’re looking at is a lawsuit that is an example of the abortion-on-demand mindset," he said.
