GAY AGENDA WATCH:Vermont high court hears arguments in groundbreaking civil union case

Oral arguments are being presented this morning at the Vermont Supreme Court, in a case that some believe will set a legal precedent between states battling recognition of homosexual unions.Justices will hear arguments from attorneys representing Janet Jenkins and Lisa Miller. Miller is a former lesbian who gave birth to a child while in a relationship with Jenkins. And although they resided in Virginia in 2000, they came to Vermont to obtain a civil union. But in 2003 they split up, and Miller returned to Virginia and later filed for dissolution of the civil union and sought custody of the child.Jenkins also sought parental rights, to the dismay of Miller.Mat Staver is the attorney for Miller, who is now a born-again Christian. The attorney says the Vermont justices are facing several issues."I think this case illustrates that when one state recognizes same-sex unions, it affects the other states...it disrupts families, it undermines the stability of moms and dads,"Staver points out."...Therefore we can't buy the notion that civil unions are okay...No, same-sex marriage should not be recognized, and neither should civil unions..."Next month, Liberty Counsel will argue a different aspect of the case at the Virginia Supreme Court. Staver says if the Virginia Supreme Court decision clashes with Vermont's Supreme Court, the case will go to the U.S. Supreme Court.
