China urges Dalai Lama to abandon advocating 'Tibet independence'

BEIJING-Chinese President Hu Jintao reiterated Beijing's position Wednesday that the Chinese government is ready to have dialogue with the Dalai Lama if he abandons advocating "Tibet independence," China's official Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday. The Chinese leader reportedly made the remarks during talks over the telephone with U.S. President George W. Bush.China is willing "to continue contacts and consultation with the Dalai Lama, as long as he truly abandons advocating 'Tibet independence' and stops activities aimed at splitting the motherland, especially activities to fan and mastermind violent crimes in Tibet as well as in some other regions," Hu was quoted as saying.
Such activities also include sabotaging the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games, he reportedly said, adding the Dalai Lama should accept that Tibet and Taiwan are inalienable parts of China. On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pressed China to pursue a new policy on Tibet and launch dialogue with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
"We believe that the answer for Tibet is to have a more sustainable policy for the Chinese government concerning Tibet," she told reporters.Repeating a U.S. call for Chinese restraint and the abandonment of violence, Rice said a Chinese dialogue with the Dalai Lama "is going to be the only policy that is sustainable in Tibet."Beijing has drawn fire after its deadly crackdowns on demonstrations against Chinese rule in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa on March 14.China occupied Tibet in 1951. The Dalai Lama, the winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, has been living in exile in India since a failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.Referring to the deadly violence in Lhasa, Hu reportedly said they were by no means "peaceful demonstrations" or activities of "non- violence" as claimed by the Dalai Lama clique, but undisguised serious and violent crimes. On Taiwan, Hu voiced his appreciation of Washington's stance that the United States adheres to the one-China policy, abides by the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, opposes "Taiwan independence" and a referendum on Taiwan's U.N. membership, and is against Taiwan's bid to join the United Nations and other international organizations, which only sovereign countries can join, the report said. The Chinese president also expressed hope that the Chinese and U.S. governments will continue to make joint efforts to secure peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, the report said.He was quoted as saying it is China's consistent stand that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan should restore consultation and talks on the basis of "the 1992 consensus," which sees both sides recognize there is only one China, but agree to differ on its definition.
