GAY AGENDA WATCH:Puerto Rico faces marriage referendum
Christian attorneys on the U.S. mainland are rolling up their sleeves to help Puerto Rico withstand any potential legal attacks from opponents of a referendum effort to strengthen a ban on same-sex "marriage" and civil unions.Puerto Rico's governor has told supporters of Resolution 99 that he would sign the bill requiring a public referendum in May-if it garners the required two-thirds majority in the island's House of Representatives, according to Associated Press. But the governor made it clear that he thinks the resolution, which would amend the constitution, is unnecessary and divisive. Other critics think it is discriminatory and have threatened possible legal action, according to Glen Lavy of the Alliance Defense Fund. "The opponents of the Puerto Rico marriage amendment are using the same kind of scare tactics to argue against it that we've seen repeatedly in the U.S. state marriage amendment battles," Lavy points out. Lavy says traditional marriage is the most unifying issue in society, and it is supported by the vast majority of people in Puerto Rico, regardless of religious or political affiliation-which is why opponents are so desperate to keep it from voters."They know that if this goes to the voters, the marriage amendment will pass," states Lavy. So far,the legislature's vote on Resolution 99 has not yet been scheduled, but Lavy says the Alliance Defense Fund has pledged to defend the marriage amendment in court if necessary.
