U.S. Abortion Rate Hits 30-Year Low

"In 2005, 1.2 million babies were killed in the womb"
The abortion rate in the U.S. fell to a 30-year low in 2005, according to the Guttmacher Institute, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood. That year, 1.2 million preborn babies were killed, compared to a high of 1.6 million in 1990.During the 1980s, one in three pregnant women chose abortion; today, it's one in five. The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) said pro-life educational outreaches and legislative initiatives are to thank."What the pro-life movement has done, and continues to do, is save hundreds of thousands of lives," said Randall K. O'Bannon, NRLC director of education and research."Falling abortion rates are a sure sign that, given truthful information about abortion, about its impact on their lives, about the child growing inside them, and given even the slightest help and encouragement, many women will choose life."Twenty-six states provide women seeking abortion with information about its risks and alternatives. Ten states allow women to view ultrasound images of their preborn child. In addition, 35 states have laws providing for parental involvement in a minor daughter’s abortion decision.Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said the pro-life message resonates with the public.“Polls continue to find that most Americans support restricting abortions to what are called ‘hard cases,’ such as rape, incest and to save the life of the mother,” she said. “The fact that such proposed abortion bans still have public support is quite a testament to the influence of the pro-life voice.”The Guttmacher report follows recent news that the U.S. is experiencing its highest birthrate in 45 years. In Kansas, Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline is doing his part to protect the preborn. In October, Kline filed 107 charges against Planned Parenthood, accusing it of performing illegal late-term abortions. In court Wednesday, Kline said Planned Parenthood “manufactured” records related to some abortions performed in 2003.When the case goes to trial, Kline plans to call as witnesses two of the clinic’s attorneys.
