HOMELAND INSECURITY:Official Sneaks Fake Bomb Past TIA Security

TAMPA - A Transportation Security Administration undercover official successfully got past security at Tampa International Airport with a simulated bomb in a security test last week, CNN.com reported today. The mock bomb was carried in an elastic back support by a man with 40 years in law enforcement and did not have any metal components, CNN says in a report that it filmed at the airport and ran on its Web site. The screener patted down the back of the undercover official, who explained the slim pack was a back support device, the report states. In the same test, the undercover agent set off a metal detector alarm and told the screener who patted him down that the alarm was triggered by his metal knee."He gets through, which in real life would mean a terrorist was headed toward a plane with a bomb," CNN.com reports.TSA officials said the Tampa airport test shows the type of systemic vulnerability that TSA is working to expose and address."The screener appears devastated," the CNN.com report states. That is a common reaction the TSA official gets when notifying screeners of failed tests, he said.
The federal TSA is responsible for security at main passenger checkpoints at Tampa International. The airport police department backs up TSA and is responsible for overall airport safety and security.
