Gulf rulers voice concern to Bush about Strait of Hormuz security after last Sunday’s Iranian-US naval encounter

Vice Adm. Kevin Cosgriff, commander of the Fifth Fleet gave his account of the incident to President George W. Bush during his visit to the fleet base in Bahrain Sunday, Jan. 13.He said he takes “deadly seriously” the threatening approach to three US warships in the strategic waterway by five Iranian speedboats. President Bush’s response was not disclosed by his spokesperson Dana Perino.DEBKAfile’s Gulf sources report that during his talks in this week in Bahrain, the UAE and Saudi Arabia the US president is facing complaints from their rulers that the US Navy’s response to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ confrontational provocation appeared hesitant instead of firm and Washington was too slow with its rejoinders.The Pentagon released partial video and audio tape recordings of the incidents after two days on Tuesday, Jan. 8 and the full version three days later, together with remarks from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, and Middle East commander Adm. William Fallon. Wednesday, President Bush warned Tehran there would be consequences if there was a repeat attack. The remark was tagged on at the bottom of his remarks to the media in Jerusalem.
