Dallas suburb allows bricks with religious messages

Plano, Texas-a suburb of Dallas-has avoided legal action after city officials initially censored bricks on a public sidewalk that displayed crosses.Last spring, Plano residents had the opportunity to purchase bricks for a sidewalk at the city's new recreation center. Those purchasing bricks were allowed to have personal messages inscribed, and several families chose to have crosses inscribed on their sidewalk bricks. However, city crews recently overturned those bricks.Hiram Sasser is with Liberty Legal Institute, which has sent a letter to Plano city officials contesting the action. The letter was meant to inform officials of constitutional rights that were violated in the overturning of the bricks. "The First Amendment of the Constitution respects the free speech and religious freedom rights of all citizens," Sasser clarifies. "Once the government allows you to put whatever message you want to put on a brick, they cannot censor a message or symbol simply because it's religious. Our Constitution prohibits that."This incident should stand as a reminder as to how important it is for Christians to stand for their rights, says Sasser. The attorney shares that after receiving the letter, officials sent crews to reposition the bricks so that the crosses are visible. The bricks were part of a fundraising effort by the city's swim team.
