Britain Battered Ahead Of Big Freeze

Police are urging motorists to be on their guard tonight as fierce winds continue to batter the country with snow and blizzards set to follow.Drivers have been told avoid the M6 motorway in Cumbria altogether after a lorry driver was killed when his truck was blown over.The 45-year-old man died when his HGV was swept into the central reservation near to junction 38 of the motorway in Tebay, Cumbria.Forecasters say 80mph gales will continue through the night in some parts of the country - and will be followed by blizzards, snow and ice in the North.Heavy snow is predicted to fall on Friday in the far west and north of Scotland, northern parts of England and Wales and Northern Ireland.There were 10 accidents on the M6 between Kendal and Carlisle, and seven people were injured.The Port of Dover is closed to shipping movements due to the fierce gusts.A spokeswoman said: "The port has been closed in the interests of safety because of the high winds."We would ask passengers expected to travel to first contact their operator for further details."Temperatures in Scotland could reach double minus figures over the weekend.The cold snap will mark a significant change after a mild January, but forecasters say it will be short-lived, with a return to milder conditions by the start of next week.Sky News weather presenter Sarah Pennock said: "Much of the UK is being affected by winds with damaging gusts of up to 70 or 80mph in exposed places, causing disruption to power lines and transport networks."Severe weather warnings are in place for Friday for heavy snow showers to northwest Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England."If you're planning to get away for the weekend, I would head south, although it may be best not to travel at all this weekend."With a change in wind direction, we'll get a blast of Arctic air and it will feel bitterly cold, with temperatures struggling to get above 3 or 4 degrees."She said things were likely to improve briefly on Saturday but could then get ugly again in some areas."After a widespread frost on Saturday morning, things will teasingly improve - some sunshine in central and southern regions, the best of the weekend."But by Sunday evening a rain band spills in from the West with the risk of hail and thunder."
