Shock And Anger At Bhutto Assassination

World leaders and supporters of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto have reacted angrily to her murder in Rawalpindi, condemning the "cowards" behind it.The 54-year-old died after being shot in the neck and chest by an unknown assassin who then blew himself up.Three days of national mourning have been declared in her honour.Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "She has been assassinated by cowards afraid of democracy."This atrocity strengthens our resolve that terror will not win here, there or anywhere in the world."US President George Bush said: "The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy."He added: "Those who committed this crime must be brought to justice."Mr Bush urged the people of Pakistan to honour Ms Bhutto's memory by continuing the democratic process.The Russian foreign ministry said it feared the country would now descend into terrorism or civil war.Neighbouring India condemned the assassination as a "barbarous act of terrorism".UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described it as an "assault on stability" in Pakistan."I strongly condemn this heinous crime and call for the perpetrators to be brought to justice as soon as possible," he said in a statement. Acting secretary general of Ms Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party Riaz Khan said the killing had "left a very black hole for Pakistan's masses."Benazir Bhutto was the voice of the Pakistani people. She was killed while Musharraf was sitting there." After paying his last respects to Ms Bhutto in hospital, another former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, vowed to continue fighting her "war".His brother, Shabbas Sharif, said: "I'm shellshocked. It's very bad for this country. Whoever has done this has done the biggest disservice to Pakistan."He added: "The government must resign, Musharraf must go home, they must hold a very transparent enquiry into Benazir's killing."Ms Bhutto's London spokesperson, Wajid Hassan, said: "The problem is the (Pakistan) government has failed to provide security."They seem to be half-hearted in providing protection to opposition parties. As far as their own parties are concerned they have been very meticulous."
